Ask a sponsored prepster

How civil prep works is that your DS will receive a manila envelope from the West Point AOG. This packet will explain the program and it basically comes down to this; Your DS will have the opportunity to attend one of four junior military colleges (Valley Forge, Marion Military Institute, New Mexico Military Institute, or North Georgia (not on the list anymore)) or Greystone Prep at Schriener University (Non Military) for one year. The AOG gives a scholarship ($3000), the host school pays a decent amount, and you cover the rest. For this next year, the appointment is yours to lose. 92-99% of sponsored prepsters get it the following year. As long as you complete the year in good standing, you will successful matriculate to West Point the following summer.

Timeline?

My DS is on list for Civil Prep, but we have no idea when he will officially find out for sure. Anyone hear about AOG Civil Prep scholarships yet or know of timeline? The waiting is definitely the most difficult part!

I heard very late in the game last year, around the late May time-frame.

AOG

Congrats on the AOG scholarship. My DS also went this same path last year and very grateful. He is now better prepared for success in the academy. Take time to chose the school that best fits your needs. They are all great schools and have their own way of doing things. Any of the schools will show you DS to follow success. The appointment is there for you to loose.

DS just got the letter!!!! Civil prep scholarship!!!! Really excited and really confused about it. Any advice via Private message would be great!

Question for those who attended MMI SAP

DS will be attending MMI this Fall and was looking for recommendations on what to bring. We received packing list and all, but wanted recommendations from experienced AOG's. Thanks!!

You don't have to carry the stuff around all day like at R-Day, so bring everything on the list. There are also a few other things that we have found extremely useful this year.
One of the best ideas we had this year was sleeping on top of our beds. Bring a sleeping bag or extra blanket/sheets to sleep above your inspection setup that way you don't have to make it every morning. :thumb:
Also, a full size ironing board, kiwi shoeshine (the kit they give is horrible), duster and good broom help tremendously.

Thanks for the info Jenks93. Also missing on the issued / packing list from MMI was any mention of combat boots. Is this something DS should buy, break-in and bring with him? Any recommendations on brands? Also, same question for low-quarters. They are listed as an issue item on the list, but should DS bring a broken-in, highly polished pair with him? Good to see no one wants to break sheets on their racks still :thumb:

Is anyone's DS' taking a bike? I think a few are taking their cars but if a fwe are taking bikes - might pack up my DS' as well...

USMA90, I wouldn't worry about boots or shoes. There is no strenuous rucking unless you are involved in ranger challenge or swamp fox. As for shoes, there will be PLENTY of time to shine shoes when waiting on the next activity during ITC. That's a good time to organize your room, shine shoes, finish academy application paperwork, and then watch Netflix the next week or so once you finish those things .
JWP, there really isn't much need for a bike. The campus is condensed, and if you go into town it'll be with other people. There also really isn't anywhere to put a bike. The only reason people have cars is to go to Tuscaloosa or home for the weekend. Some people that enjoy cycling do have them tho, but you will need to find a way to lock it up. Unsecured bikes have a tendency to be used by other people.

USMA90, I'm sorry, I don't think I completely answered your question. Your boots are issued. They are usually the bellevilles, but it is just luck of the draw. Some people did buy the Nikes or Rockys once school started, but like I said, unless you plan on doing ranger challenge or swamp fox, you pretty much wear boots to class and that's it.

We are getting ready to get our packing list together for MMI. I got the packing list supplied by MMI. However, in regards to packing civies and incidentals what do you guys suggest? Prepsters can you chime in please!!

Weinerdog, sorry for the late reply. You don't really have to bring a lot of civilian clothes because especially in the first semester, there really is not much time to go out of Marion. He will be busy with academics. But when he does get out, the biggest thing about civies is that you have to check out in a collared shirt to go anywhere so bring one or two of those. They don't need a suit, because the uniform will be worn to formal events, but a pair of dress or khaki pants were useful every now and then. Bring some comfortable clothes (gym shorts!) for studying at night if you wish. But the most entertaining thing to bring is some West Point gear if you have some. It made for some fun night hall formations when everyone was representing their future academies :)

Great info Jenks! What kind of West Point gear would you recommend. Also, can the student bring both a laptop and a decktop computer? Is there a need for both?

DS was told to bring a laptop and a printer if possible. Goin' out this weekend and grabbing him a laptop and portable printer.

Thanks for the update...being kind of a tech geek....would be worth it to hold off buying a new laptop for another month or so. New chipset coming out that will drive prices down enough to make it worth the wait. And the new intel chip...haswell...increases battery life considerably with better video performance. Worth the wait even if you do not want the latest and greatest as there will be a pretty good price drop in the high end laptops that are currently being sold...

USMA90, my DD will be a sponsored prepster with the Coast Guard Academy, so I called MMI last week and asked these very questions. I was told that you will all be issued Bates Corframs once you arrive, but you may purchase them beforehand if you prefer. Regarding boots, she said my DD will be issued these at the CGA.

The CGA preps have a 2.5 week orientation in New London before heading to MMI. Am I correct in assuming all the academies do this?

Good to see no one wants to break sheets on their racks still :thumb:

Sorry, I don't yet speak military. What does this mean?

Nicole

Breaking sheets on their racks= getting under your issued blanket in your bed and having to remake your bed in the morning. Believe me, not breaking sheets saves a lot of time :thumb:
