"Join us for the 2016 Naval History Conference on 8 and 9 September at Alumni Hall at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The Athena Conference: Heroines of Past, Present and Future
will highlight groundbreaking women across a myriad of battlefields.
The conference coincides with the 40th anniversary of women at the U.S. Naval Academy. " Hosted by U. S. Naval Institute.

I am going to this one.

I am going to miss it. Wish I could go. Really want to. Some great speakers and some incredible women will be there!

Athena Conference summary below.

Phenomenal. Powerful. History-makers everywhere. Every generation of military women represented. The USNA '80 class was well and joyously represented with most of the women present. There was an extraordinary photo montage with photos of the WASPs (huge ovation) up through women in subs, all kinds of service photos. Over 1800 packed into a filled hall. When USNA's new cyber center was announced as the RADM Grace Hopper Hall, the crowd was on its feet with a roar. I think it was also said that Hopper Hall will be the first major building named after a woman at a SA, but not sure, because the noise was deafening.

Many great conversations and reunions observed. Two little memories: (1) female mids watching black Suburbans pull up, with armed security in sunglasses and earpieces, opening the door for the female SECAF, commenting in awe, and (2) I met a member of USNA '80 who had left after plebe year and had not been back. A FB friend sent her a note about the conference the day before, and she booked a flight that night and came on a whim to see her classmates she started with in the summer of '76.

@NavyHoops: I had a great time talking with some of the women from the first Navy women's basketball team.
