My son is a 3 season varsity athlete (football offensive line men, hockey goalie and lacrosse long pole) he is a little above the weight requirement but is solid muscle. Just wondering if anyone knows how this might impact him. He attended AIM this summer, was "recommended" and applied early action...

Also, regarding the DoMerb....says no major physical activity 48 hours before exam...He is playing football...so not sure how to make that happen....any ideas how this might impact him negatively?

    Thanks...first go at this...

The reason they recommend avoiding strenuous physical activity for at least 48 hours before the exam (so I'm told) is that it contributes to protein in the urine. For old guys like me, that represents a potential kidney problem, but it is actually not uncommon in young athletes. If the urinalysis does reflect protein, that's an automatic remedial (retest.) My son encountered this last week during his physical - everything was great except for the protein/urine issue. Larry Mullen from DoDMERB (an extraordinarily helpful and efficient man, and agency, in my opinion) advises that it's not a big deal for most - just avoid strenuous activity for 3 days and drink lots of water. We followed Mr. Mullen's advice and everything worked out fine on the retest. Taking that approach prior to the original test is just to avoid the problem in the first place, I would guess. Your son may want to try it with his current football activity, but if he needs a retest, you will definitely want to have him chill for a few days prior. You might also try to schedule his physical for a Monday, assuming he doesn't have football practice over the weekend. Good luck.

I'm not much of a DodMerb expert (I'd refer you to the gentleman who answers all of those questions); however, height/weight standards on active duty only start at the tables. That is, if your son is over his max on the charts, they will "tape" him to see what his body fat percentage is. If that is an acceptable finding, he'll be ok even if he is over his max on the tables.

You might want to ask someone at USCGA just to be sure.

    DODMERB physical

We encountered a similar problem (girls basketball). We scheduled the physical for friday morning after Thanksgiving. She had to practice lightly Tuesday, nothing on Wednesday (no practice scheduled), nothing on Thursday (no practice scheduled), and was back by Friday pm for practice. Coach wasn't thrilled, but that's life.......

Thanks so much for all the information....I did tell him to miss practice....didnt go over well....but this is SOO much more important..

I was hoping they would take body fat into consideration....because he should definitely be all set then...

There are some possible waivers for athletes (not exactly sure what they are), however they must pass the final weigh-ins for commissioning.

Good call on this being more important than football practice too. :thumb:

Talk to his coach and the AD. This was an issue with my daughter and her fall sport - she was nervous but her coach was totally understanding. We found a spot on the schedule between games - they played 2-3 games a week.
With football and one game a week -if he plays Friday night then have him take off Sat and Sun and test on Monday am. If he plays Sat - just move the dodmerb to Tuesday.
