Awaiting Scholarships

With the Army scholarship, the candidate is asked to apply to 7 colleges. With the Navy Scholarship, the candidate is asked to apply to 5 colleges. The colleges all require deposits (some also require housing deposits) if you are accepted and want to hold a spot. However, it is quite expensive to send deposits to all of those schools if you are accepted to them all (some do not offer refunds). If you are waiting on the Army or Navy Scholarship decisions (which they determine the school where you can use them), then what do you do? That is a lot of money to lose if you put down the deposits to hold the spot. If you don't put the money down, you can lose the spot and the scholarship may be for that school.

The Army notifications can be as late as March and the Navy can go into May. That makes it really late to be reserving a spot and making preparations.

Have you been boarded for AROTC yet? If so, but you do not win a scholarship and are rolled over to the March board, you would hopefully hear of your status by the end of March/beginning of April. Check the deposit deadlines of each school you have been accepted to and weigh the options of paying the deposit(s) before hearing if you've won a scholarship. Unless those deadlines are really early, it seems to me a lot of college deadlines are April/May or later. Granted the housing deposit guarantees a room and some dorms fill up quickly.

Keep in mind that for AROTC many of those who received scholarships from the first board were given up to three schools to pick from. The second board hasn't released anything yet so scholarship winners may get 3 schools, or only 1 or 2. The third board will probably only offer scholarships to 1 or 2 listed schools (based on what I've read on this forum). You could get your 1st school or your 6th school.

Under the normal admissions process you usually do not have to accept an offer of admission, and pay a deposit, until May 1. Most people will know one way or the other on whether they're getting a scholarship by mid-April. This normally leaves plenty of time to address this. If you still haven't heard prior to May 1 and are still in the running for a scholarship, pick your school and place a deposit. If you win a ROTC scholarship elsewhere you can try to transfer it. At some point you have to place your bets.

ca2midwestmom AROTC scholarship winners haven't been announced yet so if you were boarded you still wouldn't know if you have received one

Yes, that's correct. What I was trying to ask the OP is if he/she was boarded for the Jan 6 board. If their application wasn't complete by the 2nd board, he/she would not be boarded until the 3rd board, and subsequently would not hear anything until late March/April (vs Jan). Hopefully everyone hears something from the 2nd board soon. :thumb:

Usually, but not always, Clarkson Army will give everyone a heads up when CC starts loading board results into the system. He can see it on his end few days before we are notified on our end. I'm hoping that he'll be able to do the same thing this go-around.

AROTC scholarship application down next couple of weekends

And just to add anxiety to the wait, the following messages are posted on the AROTC application home page:

* The 4-Year High School Scholarship Application will be unavailable on Saturday, 25 Jan 2014, 0600 (EST) until Monday, 27 Jan, 2014, 0600 (EST) due to routine system maintenance.

* The 4-Year High School Scholarship Application may be unavailable from Saturday, 1 Feb 2014, 0600 (EST) until Monday, 3 Feb, 2014, 0600 (EST) due to routine system maintenance.

* The 4-Year High School Scholarship Application may be unavailable from Saturday, 8 Feb 2014, 0600 (EST) until Monday, 10 Feb, 2014, 0600 (EST) due to routine system maintenance.

Does this mean they will be updating application files? :thumb:

This is PURELY anecdotal, but the weekend before the decisions for the first board were released, my son noticed that the application portal was down for "routine maintenance". He said something to me about it and wondered if they were getting ready to release results. I told him it was just probably their usual maintenance that they sometimes performed on weekends. Well, it's a good thing I didn't take him up on his offer of placing a bet on it, because I would have definitely lost! The results were released right after that weekend. I'm thinking this pre-announced "unavailability" of the system could be a sign that the results are getting ready to be released, but since I'm not the betting kind, we'll just have to wait & see. Best of luck to you!

Well, maybe..... but it seems unlikely it needs to be down 3 weekends in a row to post the results of a single board. I expect the first weekend is, in fact, normal maintenance and the other weekends are tentatively scheduled in case they hit some difficulties with whatever they are doing.

I would buy off on that! I agree that they wouldn't need 3 weekends to announce results since the results of the 2nd board have typically rolled out over 2-3 days in the past. I think your logic makes perfect sense.

If you contact admissions they may work with you on your deposits if you are still awaiting decisions.
