We were wondering if the direct deposits for our soon-to-be Midn have to be in a specific bank or can we open an account for our son at our bank(that has branches in Annapolis) and have his "paycheck" deposited there - that way we can supplement his spending money if needed...

Thanks!!

All forms for Navy Federal will be in the permit to report package. You can change to other banks however, Navy Fed has branch on yard and is very convenient. Other option after he is at USNA as will need to have his alpha number is USAA. USAA is also good for Renters insurance. They have an office outside Gate 1 so you might want to check them out.

As much as you may think that your Mid does not need renters insurance I would advice getting it. Although it should be a "safe" place - don't count on it, things do go missing. Especially if they have sporting equipment - bike golf clubs, laptop computer, Iphone, and of course by second year class ring.

Thanks Profmom2!

Are debit cards readily accepted at most places on the Yard? He has had a debit card for years, and we like the convenience of it as well as the responsibilty of him needing to balance his checkbook.

I believe so - Drydock, Midstore. I am not sure about at the coffee carts, I do know that they take the yard card. Many of the Mids do not like the yard card as it can only be used on the yard. Debit cards much more usable.

Usna banking options for incoming plebes

This is a clip directly from a recent email to me from the USNA Midshipman Disbursing Office: "It is not mandatory for midshipmen to open acounts with NFCU. Incoming mids are required to provide bank routing and account info via mail before I-day, or physically on I-Day. They can provide info to whatever bank they desire. When people do not have any bank accounts established, they are sent to NFCU to open accounts, which allows us to set up their direct deposits before the monthly disbursing cutoff." Their telephone is 410-293-3307.

They can bank with whom ever they want - I never implied that they could not. Just that Navy Federal comes in the permit to report package and they make it easy to get an account.

My son found that trying to get to a bank off the yard plebe year when you don't get off until after 12pm became impossible. Left only to be able to use an ATM.

Thanks Capt. MJ!

I figure if he has his debit card and we have easy access to make transfers into his account he won't need to try to make it to any branch office off the Yard...

So do I call the number of the disbursing office to give them the routing number or should he just wait until I-day? I'd like to get as much done ahead of time, but I fear the lateness of the Permit to Report package is going to really press us for time...

Thanks again!!

Can we trust the banks? I was thinking of getting my son an extra mattress with a secret compartment! Just kidding. No, really, just kidding...sort of!

USNA:

They will never see the money for four years. No need for the mattress zipper. Who knows where it goes. Laundry looses uniform item, can't find = charge to account for new. Lab partner borrows Calculator and looses it = Charge to account for new and on and on and on. To them it is not like real money until they see the final accounting and what is left.
