BCG's

DD is concerned about getting glasses at USNA (BCG's). She has the very mildest of prescriptions, and only wears her glasses when sitting in the back of a large room. She doesn't need them for any other reason.
She really doesn't want to be stuck having to wear the BCG's if she gets them (we can only imagine the only time she would need them would perhaps be for shooting).
Sooo, the question is, do plebes HAVE to wear the BCG's when they are issued on I-Day, or can they just store them until needed?
Thanks!

Great question, I don't recall hearing/seeing addressed. A pure speculation ... and the detailers might not be this rigid ... but I'm guessing one cannot pick and choose when glasses are to be worn. But hey, this is the "new" Navy ... "A Global Force for Good ... Unless Your Initials are UBL". As well, while not a major issue, doing so may risk drawing attention to oneself and being seen as a vanity issue. Now that might lend itself to some extra, undesired attention. Again, mine is pure speculation, worth precisely the "paper" it's written on!

I think they can pick and choose when to wear them. Thinking back to last PS, there were a couple of Plebes with BCG's in my Plebe's squad, but they didn't seem to wear them consistently. I remember that because BCG's are useful when you are doing your 'where's my waldo' search on the usna facebook page daily PS photos - if someone in your Plebe's company or squad is wearing them, you can use that as a benchmark for searching. Hence my frustration with inconsistent wearing of the BCG's! My suggestion is that your D get the BCGs and use them in as needed. There will be some classroom evolutions - ethics lectures I think - and there will be some evening briefs in Alumni Hall where slide presentations will be made.

Our son's eyesight sounds similar to your daughter's. Last summer he started out on I Day wearing the BCGs all the time, but by the end of Plebe summer he wasn't wearing them at all. Your daughter should be able to tell whether or not it'll be an issue with her detailers as time passes during the summer. :thumb:

Yes, I'd say just get them. It only 'costs' a completed form.
My eyesight is not bad at all, I can see without them, and have gone without them for a while (though I do need glasses).
So I just got two pairs civy glasses for the AC year, and requested BCGs.
After all, it wouldn't harm to have them and not need them, rather than the opposite.

Your DD will not get to CHOOSE to get them or not. She will be issued them. She however will be able to choose when to wear them. I recommend she have them on her at all times in the beginning. i recall when I was a plebe not always getting back to Mother B (aka Bancroft Hall the dormitory) b/w evolutions and going from say, swimming straight to a classroom setting/briefing. The last thing your DD wants to happen is get caught squinting in the back of the room trying to read something b/c then they'll (detailers) will make sure she ALWAYS has them.

According to Navy Regulation you are REQUIRED to have two sets of glasses (if you have a deficiency that gives you a prescription). Even if you wear contacts you still are required to have your two sets of glasses.

My son had the opposite problem. He needed glasses and had sent in his perscription as directed in PTR package. They did not have his BCGs on I Day. He still packed away his glasses and went without for most of the summer. He even managed to shoot expert without his glasses. When they had an eye exam later in the summer, it was discovered that he should have had BCGs. He was then ordered to wear them at all times.
