BCT 2013

Your stuff will be inspected during SAMIs, so don't think you'll be able to hide much. Just follow the directions given, and BCT gets much easier.
(Don't disengage your brain, as I've seen basics interpret directions in genuinely stupid ways. :shake: )

There will be a contraband check-in, and safest option is put anything at seems like contraband in your backpack and turn it in.

and yes. don't ever underestimate what a stressed and tired basic is capable of. falling off bunk beds, running into fire hydrants, you'd be surprised.

One TI told me that he once told day 1 trainees to "Go shave all the hair off your faces." One trainee returned without eyebrows!

Like I said, don't disengage your brain.

Yes, thank you guys! Y'all are awesome!!

I have one specific question... I read all over the forum that guys will be issued underwear, while our "Instructions to Appointees" booklet says to "bring enough plain white briefs or boxers and v-neck tee shirts to last a week and a half". Is USAFA issuing males underwear to the c/o of 2017 or are we on our own? Can anyone clarify either way? Thanks!

that is up in the air...due to reasons unbeknownst to us, it is possible that usafa is no longer allowed to require that certain undergarments be worn. that being said, just get a dozen pairs of white boxers and 4 v white v neck shirts and you should be fine

is it okay if boxer briefs are black? I bought compression shorts and briefs in black because well black tends to stay more clean without stain for a longer period of time.

That just made my day!

should be fine. as far as compression shorts are concerned, black, white, or gray. pretty much anything without color is fine

Cash for BCT

I keep seeing references to cadets needing cash during BCT to make purchases at the cadet store for toiletries, cleaning supplies, etc. I'm not sure I'm following why it must be cash. Does the cadet store not take debit cards? Will they have their wallets taken from them when they arrive for in-processing? I know they'll take phones, watches, etc, but if they are allowed to hang onto cash for the store, wouldn't they be allowed to have a debit card for the store? I feel like I'm missing some important part of this whole system. lol

To my knowledge, you bring cash because a debit card may (maybe specifically, maybe accidentally) have been confiscated or, assuming you have it, has the possibility of being denied. You can't go wrong with cash and, on a day where the basic cadet will be very, very busy, the stress relief will be nice.

My DS didn't have any cash with him and it was super super stressful. Every letter he wrote begged for us to send money. It takes awhile for letters to go back and forth, so he didn't get the money until after he no longer needed it. He had to borrow money from other cadets which was ok but he really didn't need the extra stress. They can't always make sure that they have items with them because their time is not their own. Please make sure your appointee has enough cash with them.

BCT Cash

Last year, we sent our DS with $300 cash. He had plenty for everything he needed and had money left over. I would recommend that you send about this amount of cash; then they don't have to worry about it if things come up that they need.

Yes, there actually is...in their room! Remember the cadet honor code! But...if you are really actually worried about this, I'm sure a pair of socks will suffice.

They have a drawer with a lock. This is inspected and they get in trouble if it isn't locked!

I take Doxycycline, an oral prescription drug for Acne. Will I be allowed/have time to take it during BCT? When I don't take it I break out very badly.

Ditto for my son, and no, they usually won't let them take non-essential medications. Sun is good for acne and he'll get plenty of that.

The Sun is actually harmful to acne despite popular belief. It may look like the sun clears it up but it really irritates it even more in the long run. I'm just going to use my proactive face wash for my acne.
