Beast Packing List 2013

This is your first test. There will always be more stuff that you are suppose to have and want to have than you have room for. Learn to prioritize, economize on space, and come up with alternate means to get what you want/need.
good point! You can get mailed things during Beast correct? If so, how soon? and when will we know our mailing address so we can receive things, if it isn't til once we get there will we have an opportunity to notify our parents of our address?

I have a couple of quick questions about the packing list. For the socks, is it alright if they have a logo on the top of the foot of the sock? You can't see the logo when your wearing your shoes/boots, but I can't seem to find socks without a logo. This is especially true for crew socks, where it seems as though all crew socks have a logo on top of the foot. Also, for compression shorts, is it alright if they have a different colored waistline. Like for the Nike compression shorts, they are all black, but have a gray waistline. Is this acceptable? Thanks!!

The normal rule of thumb is that if you can't see it in the normal uniform wear, then it's OK. But some of the current cadets should comment. But that's the input from our state's cadets to appointees when asked.

IE: anything that would be hidden by shoe or boot, etc.

Ex: DS wears white underarmor type shirts with logo on the chest under White over Grey, As for class, etc.

But an tan undershirt with chest logo would not be OK with ACU's as there are times you take the blouse off and it would show.

Socks for PT that have logo's at the top of the ankle, etc are also normally a problem.

Black socks for W/G and AFC uniforms are a bit of a judgement call. Some people color the logo in with a sharpie if it is not hidden by the shoe.

DS has been able to find socks that he liked that did not have logo's (Thorlo uniform, etc), so it's been less of an issue there. Underarmor type undershirts are a bit harder, though he's found generic at Wal-Mart that were logoless and virtually identical to shirts 3x the price.

It does not seem to be that big of a deal the last couple of CBT's, based on the last couple of CBT's in our state.

But like nearly all things West Point, it will depend on the Comm, your company, your squad leader, etc.

And it's not something to sweat. Worst case you can't wear them and send a letter home asking for XYZ.

Not to beat the question to death, but what about things like toothpaste/toothbrush and shaving cream/razors?
If I remember correctly shaving cream and a razor are issued at the beginning. Although I won't be entirely certain until a week or so from now.

Those are not on the 'issued' list at all. (Soap and deodorant are on the issued list, though now that you've mentioned quantity I'll be sure to take some of my own.) I'm sure I'll probably have most essential items with me from the one-night stay before R-Day, but I'm not sure if I need to actually pack those types of items with the duration of Beast in mind.

Again, thank you for your input.

Pack what you feel comfortable bringing. Your cadre will almost certainly ensure that your needs are met so long as you make them aware of those needs. Stick with whatever list you were sent and if you want to bring more than that based on advice given here then feel free to do so. There are really no hard and fast rules about what you should/shouldn't bring.

Generally speaking under-clothing with logos can be worn so long as the logo is not visible.

Bump on the packing list threrad.

So understanding a list will be available for our DSs and DDs soon....it is winter...we are snowed in...and there is not much else to do so with that - any good practical suggestions or additions to what has already been posted?

I believe I read Underarmor is okay but black out the logo?

That's what we did. Try to use the Sharpie that's made for laundry marking - think it's labeled "Rub a Dub" - lasts longer I believe.

More white T's than you think. And hard to black out the typical logos on a white T. And they show through with White/Gray.

So the trick is to find the generics at Sports Authority, Wal-Mart, etc. DS probably has close to 2 dozen at this point and reached equilibrium.

You'll go through this with socks as well, though that's a bit more variable. But black thorlo type uniform socks will become a common request. But personal preference also factors in more.

For the black stuff, don't sweat logos if they do not show. Exception would be logos on leg hem of shorts, or ankles of athletic socks as they can show in PT's.

Oops, meant to say: "You'll probably want to get more white T's than you think"

Typos in the earlier post brought to you by tapatalk on my phone and fat fingers!

Just some friendly advice here....only brings supplies totally necessary for R-Day. You will have to carry all that stuff, plus everything WP gives you most of the day. Carrying around a grossly heavy awkward bag and being mentally FREAKED-OUT (and you will be) is not a good combination.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but does anyone have any suggestions on boots to get?

Also, are we allowed to shine our low-quarters before plebe summer?

You can come to R-Day with your low quarters shined or not. You will be taught the "army" way to shine them during BEAST. My cadet purchased the Men's M-8 Tactical Boot (desert sand) for BEAST and they did well for him. He did not suffer with blisters like many new cadets. You will receive a "boot" letter from West Point that will have all the admissible boots...I would wait for that letter before purchasing. Break in those boots and low quarters before R-Day...you will thank me later. Also, invest in some high quality socks that are moisture wicking (will help prevent blisters).

Got it! I guess I won't need to get rid of my JROTC low-quarters after all

This is the list I've come up with so far. (with advice from many cadets)

Underwear (lots, comfortable)
Sports Bras (lots, comfortable)
Spandex (lots)
Hair ties, bobby pins, comb & headbands same color as hair
Fan (small)
Chapstick with sunscreen
Gallon& Quart Ziplock bags- 40 each
Journal
Bug spray
Multitool
Address book with stamps and envelopes
Anti chaffing creme
Advil
Foot powder
Hair bands
Loofa
Antibacterial body wash (the soap they issue is disgusting)
Shampoo-Conditioner
Thick black sharpie (for labeling your gear)
Q-tips
Watch with alarms & light up face
Febreeze and body spray
Biore daily deep pore cleansing cloths

R-Day:
Wear shorts and tee-shirt with low quarters or sneakers

A-Day:
Have parents bring you:
Civilian clothes, towels & washcloths, pillow & blanket, deep conditioner, coffee maker and shorter white socks (or buy these off post that weekend)

Just threw this together and figured I'd share. Lemme know what you think.

That was a bit much..
I'd say yes to about 2 weeks worth of underwear, spandex, sports bras. A lot of hair ties if you're a female. About 10 ziplock bags will do, i did find them useful. Yeah a journal was good to have. Stamps, a list of addresses (envelopes were given). Multi-tool and bug spray were good. You can buy shampoo/conditioner/body wash when you go to the C-store, or even mail them to yourselves before beast (you wont get mail for the first week probably). You'll get sharpies. Definitely bring a watch with an alarm. Yes, baby wipes are great for when you're out in the field, but you can buy these at the C-store as well.
