Great info all. Thanks for everyone's input and experiences.
From what I remember -
Beast - I don't think there is any rhyme or reason as to how they are put into Companies, except (as some have stated), the athletic teams are spread out over 2 companies (maybe 1 Company for the smaller sports). For example, the FB team will be spread out over 2 Companies.
They are sorted by height within their squads.
AY - after Beast, they are placed into their Companies by squad. Each squad gets assigned to a different AY Company. They want to split you up from your Beast buddies. Then, you could be in the same AY Company for all 4 years (that hasn't happened in a while) or you could be placed in a new Company after Plebe year or after Yuk year. The one constant about West Point is that nothing stays the same. Every time there is a new Comm, he/she changes things up. When my DS was at WP, he had 4 different Comms - so there was a lot of change year to year.
Once you are in your AY Company, they march with the Firsties in front (by height) and then by height for the rest of the classes.
