Well...today is the day! The first class will find out who passed and failed their Coast Guard License Exams today (05Jun09). This is the final step before graduation. If you want to see what the goal line looks like in four years, go to the parents page at the USMMA website and click on the link.

Also, you will see a pic of the first day of tests. Note the study material on the corner of the desk where each first classman is sitting. This is the study material they have been processing for 16 hours a day for the past two weeks.

Congrats to Class of 09!!!:shake:

What happens to those that fail their CG license exam?

Do they graduate?

Do they get to take it again? How many times?

If they are unable to pass and maintain a CG license as required, do they have to pay back the Govt for their education?

Are they released from their service obligation?

Our candidate's onsite visit, last year, was the last day the Academy scheduled them. We saw the test site with the rows of tables and stacks of documents......I think the testing was set for the next day. Made one heck of an impression.

Impossible to think four years ahead.

Congratulations to each and every Midshipman that has successfully "stayed the course" and will be sitting for this exam. Well Done.

Luigi as far as I know they only have to retake the portions that they did not pass. I don't think there is a limit to the number of attempts. DS said he could remember hearing the bell being rung when he was a candidate at Indoc. They cannot graduate until they pass.

There is a 70% first pass rate. I think Deck has to pass with a score of 90% and Engine has to pass with 80%. Those who failed a section will be able to retest those sections next week. I think they will have several chances to pass the section test. If they fail, I don't know if they will be held over or given a delayed commission until they pass the test.

2008

Engine had over 90% 1st time pass rate and deck had in the 70%'s.

Congrats to those who got to whack the heck outta that bell yesterday. What a sight to see! Pretty crazy stuff happened with lots of laughter going on.

If anyone was watching & caught sight of a kid in a kilt, that one was mine! Atleast I didn't have the kid who was in the Sponge Bob costume.

I was told that the Deckies broke a record with an 82% first time pass rate this year. Don't know if its fact yet but would be great news if its true.

ON TO GRADUATION! FINALLY!!!! Congrats to all of them!

Is it on you tube? I could not get to the link? How are the tests graded so fast scantrons or are they on line? What happens if the don't pass to they still go to graduation and get a pending certificate? Sorry for all the questions just obsessing 4 years in advance.

I'm sure someone will upload some of the stuff to youtube, but the link is usually on the usmma parents page. Someone else help me out here for the actual link.

As to the grading and what happens. The Coast Guard actually grades all the tests and the test is run exclusively by them. The Academy provides the room and that's about it. The tests are all multiple choice and of the scantron type. If you fail you don't graduate. There are many options as to what happens between failing and graduation, but basically there is enough time for one retake between now and graduation.

Don't quote me on this, but in the past it is usually if you fail 2 or less sections you only have to retake those sections. If you fail 3 or more then you have to retake the whole test. There is also a time thing where if you fail a part you can't retake that part for a certain number of days. Maybe one of the 1st classmen or recent grads or parents can quote the actual retake rules.

You tube is just the first five minutes or so of the bell ringing. I trust the parent's assoc. will be posting the event in full soon. Its not there as of yet.

A very trusted source provided:

This was sent out to the Deckies:

I have the statistics for license exams for the past 23 years.

Here is where the class of 2009 stands.

Class of 2009 First time pass rate 82%. The last time that pass rate was achieved by a class was in 1996. In the 23 years of data there have only been three times that a class has exceeded that percentage. 1993, 1992, & 1991

Rules of the Road First time pass rate was 96%. The last time that pass rate was achieved by a class was in 1996. In the 23 years of data there have only been two times that a class has exceeded that percentage. 1990 & 1989.

Navigation Combined (Terrestrial Nav., Navigation Plot and Celestial Nav. combined) First time pass rate was 87% . The last time that pass rate was achieved by a class was in 1995. In the 23 years of data that pass rate was only exceeded twice. 1987 & 1986.

As to what happens at graduation, I've actually only head hearsay that those not passing can walk at graduation but walk with an empty tube. There is no shame in not passing the first time but I'm sure the Mids feel the pain of it. They'll get one more chance to retake before graduation. It is one wicked test. I saw the study guides, ect..Very intense. Just know that they are well prepared & get lots of help. As has been said many times of KP. No one makes it through alone. I stand by that motto.

Confirmed that KP2001 is correct. Its done the same way this day & time. There are several who missed passing just one of the modules by one point. IF the Mids don't get by the retake, they will become a deffered graduate (will not graduate this year) and retake the test in a few months. Don't know the rules as to how many times they are allowed to retake.

The engineers got rocked this year as the CG used many more new questions than normal and the study material wasn't 100% up to date.

The bell ringing video is finally up on the parents page.

http://www.usmma.edu/parents/

A Kilt, a bannah costume, a good old fashioned guitar smashing & a Mid in full toga. Fun times! Turn down your sound if you are easy offended by foul words & such. They are sailors afterall! LOL

Very Exciting!!! Good Video. Loved the toga, banana and kit!! :) :) Did anyone break their finger this year like last? Got it caught between the striker and the bell.

LOL No but I saw a guy fall FLAT on his back when he went to kick the bell & sorta kinda missed. Owwwww. That had to freaking hurt! And its all saved on video baaaaaby! He can re-live the pain over & over again.

The guy that tried to kick the bell....OMG...what was he thinking!!! Others had been sliding on those slick stones just running and trying to stop to ring the bell. The way he landed, I hope his left elbow is OK...That had to hurt!!!

He was probably so happy...he was feeling no pain. Did you mention the guy in the Toga????
