Best and worst first duty assignments?

I am sure 2018 will get use to profanity. I am also sure you would not appreciate anyone that your DS/DD being spoke to in this manner by anyone in the process for getting an appointment. Finally I am sure you would be upset if your DS/DD was a minor. Young people can sometime be smart mouth and there are ways to deal with it without put downs, threats of shooting, and foul language. His question was simple and it was not necessary to respond with more question that he would not have a clue. 5 bases, favorite/not favorite, why is that so hard, or boring, or so out of the ordinary?
The reaction of the LOF posse is way out of line!

If he's already received acceptance, he's likely 17 or 18. This isn't a 5 year old that needs soap in his mouth or a spanking, although I'm guessing that you think that would be too harsh too.

Aseanag, I guess you could help. What have been your favorite and least favorite bases, when you were in? Certainly, it can't be that hard!

The use of profanity on this site is addressed HERE . Please read the site rules before trying to enforce your own standards on the Forum. For those who do not read through all of the general posting rules, here is what they say regarding profanity:

- Be mindful of your language. We understand that colorful language is a fact of military life, and while profanity will not normally be a concern, it will quickly become one if its use is excessive or extreme. Determining what is "excessive" or "extreme" will be the responsibility of the Moderators and Site Staff and their decisions in this regard will be final.

Bolded emphasis is mine.

The best response I got for this was from a graduating cadet of USCGA. 75% GPA,20% military and 5% CFT. I don't know how accurate but this is apparently how they determine if a graduating cadet gets their top choice or not. A management major also stated that he received a pilot slot through competition -also, that the choice of one's major doesn't really matter when it comes to who gets to go to Pensacola for UPT and about only 10% of their class didn't get what they wished for and are unhappy.

If you're talking about USCGA, your major actually is a factor in acceptance to flight school straight from the Academy. There's definitely a preference for STEM majors, as only 2-3 goverment/management majors at most go straight to flight school.

That's only because government majors have too much policy-making to do.... no enough time to play with toys.

Sam, do you guys still use the term "bore-ass" at all?

LITS, your first couple responses might have been toward the excessive side, but after people started setting out easy targets, I can't really blame you for knocking them down!

Aseanag, while what constitutes foul language does vary, I congratulate your reluctance to use any of it. However, your responses are going to the extreme side. Profanity is present in our culture. Demanding people don't use common phrases for where they are isn't likely to do much except get people annoyed.

Iceman2018, STOP DIGGING! Here's a couple pointers: First, when you criticize, someone who spent four years at a place, don't try to impress them with your incredible 1 day of experience. Second, don't name drop with people you don't know, especially if the name you are dropping is someone you hardly know. As you can see, it doesn't go well when the people involved know each other better than you do. Third, trying to belittle a veteran with their reserve status is going to annoy them and make you look like a petty idiot. Finally (for now), if people ask you to clarify a question, just do it. We were trying to help give you a better answer, but you blew us off.

Stealth,
If you have determined this thread is acceptable and all responses have been okay and your only concern is my interpretation of what is acceptable to say to a minor then I rest my case.

2018 best wishes to you. Keep looking for the information that you need to make the right decision for you. There are many seasoned military people that would love to answer all your questions. Find them and don't look back. Your responses here are extreme and not at all the norm. You should be proud of your accomplishments and may you find a academy/university that will fulfill your dreams.

Just remember, my firest response has some good info in it and I told Iceman he needed to narrow it down...

He was less than receptive to that advice and info. Ha, and from there I did get a little more "excessive."

Hey nothing against government majors...I'm one of those rare engineers who actually enjoys humanities.

Sure do.

By no means did I use any profanity or derogatory language to come across as disrespectful.

Profanity does not necessarily = disrespect. And the lack of profanity does not equate to respect either.

I may have alluded to metaphors and attempts at humor but if it offended anyone, I apologize. It's all a giant jigsaw puzzle that I'm trying to put together. This forum has been a godsend and I've learned tons of useful knowledge from it.

This is the best response you've had thus far.

A little humility will take you a long way. In your quest for knowledge / information, you've failed to understand the value of wisdom - which is applied knowledge. Wisdom comes from experience, which is what many of those who are taking you to task on this forum have, and what someone at your age and stage of life is lacking.

You've been asked to be more specific in your questioning for a reason - so that those who have superior levels of age, rank, and experience to yourself (and I'm not including myself in any of these categories, except age) can provide you with information that is relevant to your specific situation and set of concerns. More knowledge/information often translates into more noise and confusion - whereas knowledge that you can actually apply to your life and circumstances can result in you gaining wisdom - that is, if you're willing to listen and learn.

The key to unlocking this however is your attitude. Thus far, you've shown a shocking level of arrogance and disrespect for those who are clearly your superiors.

For example,

This is more like it.:thumb: Wonder why others have to make it so complicated?

Your thumbs up here is essentially a thumb to the nose of everyone prior who had asked you to narrow down the focus of your questioning. And your question here is not a question - it's a judgement, that those who are making this request are unreasonable, bitter old codgers who are too dense to understand a simple question from someone as wise as yourself.

A better response would have been, "I'm not sure what you mean by narrow it down - can you help me understand why this is important, or give me some examples?"

This type of response shows deference and respect - and that you appreciate the fact that others with insight into the path you're considering walking down are willing to invest their time freely to help you out. Unfortunately, your responses thus far have been filled with a sense of entitlement and ill informed judgements of others that you are frankly not in a position to judge.

To fully understand this, I suggest you review this thread and others you've participated in on this forum with your parents, uncle, brother to see their reaction. Hopefully, for your sake, they will have some helpful advice as to how best to win friends and influence people.

Ha! Guess I should have skipped that 7:30 AM tee time this Friday morning. It happened again! My goodness! It has been a very entertaining thread. Thank you all.

Iceman, I wrote you off quite a ways back because of your tone. However, I am going to chime in again here to say that Bravo has given you some very good insight. It is very often not what you say but how you say it. If you want people to help you or to follow you this is something you must figure out.

Thought you said you're "inactive reserve" ?
Must be tough to find anything else better to do?
Enjoy your early retirement and thank you for your service.
I guess some don't just fade away in the sunset -so why don't you be like a bee and........

Haha, I actually never saw this until i started reading through the posts...

It's true, I have better things to do, but it's also very hard to look away from digital train wrecks.

I'm not retired. People who serve over 20 years can retire, not people like me who did "five and dive" (with the exception of medical retirements....which I do not have). So if you leave before you hit 20, it's called "separating."

"Be like a bee?" HAHA!

No, but it's OK. I'm not in anymore. I don't rate the respect of a current active duty member of the military. I'm OK with that. That's just part of the price of getting out. I like what I do now. I give more respect for the 1% of the population than currently serves more than I do for the 10% of the population that are veterans. That said, I still respect their service too.

This post is priceless though, I have no idea how I missed it. Very nice. Classy even! :thumb:

A friend of mine gave me these noise-canceling earphones and it works!
Can't even hear background noise, not even the jet engine.
Awesome!

Finally just got home.
Found this quote on the new library of West Point.
Maybe someone knows who wrote it? Without google or Wikipedia :)

"I hope our wisdom will grow with our power, and teach us, that the less we use our power, the greater it will be"

Yup!
Filters out all the thoughtful guidance that other posters might provide that he doesn't want to hear...

Thomas Jefferson - which is appropriate since the WP Library is named for him.
I hope you saw the wonderful statue of him in the Rotunda of Jefferson Hall. The sculpturer attended West Point . :thumb:
