I am not a parent, but I figured the parents would probably know the best answer to my question.

I am going to visit West Point on a Monday. I will be leaving from my college near Philadelphia and will need to ride either by train or cab to get to West Point by Monday morning. I expect to have to stay in a hotel on Sunday night, and then will return to school Monday night. Does anyone have any experience riding the train to West Point? Which service do you use, which stations, etc. Thanks in advance for any help

Railroad
Metro-North has rail service from Grand Central Station in mid-town Manhattan, up the east bank of the Hudson. Trains to Garrison, NY, directly across the river from West Point, take approx 1 hour and 10 minutes and cost a little under $15. If you don’t have a car, get off at Peekskill, one stop south of Garrison, where cabs are often waiting. You may want to call to reserve a Highland Falls or Peekskill cab. Driving time from Garrison or Peekskill to West Point is approximately 20 minutes.

You could also consider taking Amtrak to Newark Airport Train Station, then take a train to Secaucus Junction and then transfer to a train to Harriman Station (the Port Jarvis line). Harriman Station is in Central Valley, NY which has a huge outlet mall, several hotels and is around a 20 minute taxi ride to West Point. Check out the departure and return schedule though because Harriman doesn't have as many arrivals/departures as Garrison.
