Boy, where has the last year gone when I said goodbye to my son at the airport for his trip to the springs? Congratulations to all the 2015 appointees for their accomplishments thus far and the big step you're taking to serve your country. Congratulations also to the parents and others who have helped support their appointees and enabled them to succeed. A word of warning to the dads out there - be aware of high pollen levels and allergies as you send your child off. You may want some kleenex or sunglasses for assistance. Fasten your seat belts and have fun looking for your son or daughter playing "Where's Waldo" this summer with Web Guy!

I can only imagine how the appointees and their parents are feeling right about now. To the Appointees: Always remember that you can do whatever you set your mind too! Today may seem impossible, but that's what you thought about yesterday and you lived to talk about it! Good Luck to all of you!! You should be PROUD to say that you are an Air Force Academy Appointee. You join an elite group of young men and women. As to all the Parents: I am sure your children will be in great hands. Granted they will not be yours, but they have not gotten to where they are without all your love and support. I'm sure each and every one is more than ready for what awaits them. Enjoy these last few days with your young adults. Life will change forever for all of you. Good Luck to you Parents as well!

I am hoping to be in the same situation next year.

Hard to believe but in the end you'll be surprised by how fast this goes by. I just sent our last letter to our graduate's Academy PO Box today wishing the new 2015 well and giving them some indication of the great things that might be coming their way. Thanks all for your willingness to serve, the active duty Air Force is now the smallest in history, so every airman counts.

    Hey 2015,

A few words of wisdom(?) from a guy who had a hell of a time in basic last year transitioning away from home:

First of all, the line "once the academic year hits, there will be 3 times us all giving you a hard time" is 99% false. The sophomores last year in my squad were so awesome and instrumental in helping the four degrees out. Our inboxes and doors (for the main part) are ALWAYS open as we were in your shoes just a few months ago.

Second, as much as you may lose sight of it, it (all the crap you go through before being recognized) IS worth it. Recognition is the best feeling and most rewarding experience EVER.

Finally, BCT may feel like the toughest, slowest time of your life (I know it did for me). Just know that it passes and that you'll be so much closer with everyone who went though it with you. The cliched "the friends you gain" statements are all 110% true. Write letters, family/friends/girlfriends/boyfriends WRITE TO THEM, it is what got me (and I'm sure some of my classmates) through such a trying time especially for a straight out of high school kid who was missing out on warm days at the beach with his friends.

It will be tough, for some of you like me, it will be the worst experience of your life...at the time. Afterwards, feel the accomplishment and feel extremely proud of yourself. 99% of the cadets here are here for you, whether it seems like it or not...the other 1%, well, that's life.

Can't wait to meet you all, best of luck, if you ever need anything shoot me a PM on this site, or email me. My name's Derek Sandblom and I'm in the class of 2014, you should be able to figure out my email address :thumb:

To all the young men and women from Pennsylvania. Thank you for all you have committed to do. Thanks for your willingness to serve out great country, the United States of America and defending the noble cause of freedom.

God Bless, God Speed and Good Luck,

    RGK

    To the Class of 2015...

You will feel uncomfortable, at first – way out of your comfort zone. You may even think that you’ve made an enormous mistake in deciding to attend the Air Force Academy. Remember there are others there just like you. However, in the very near future, there will come a day when BCT will be over … you’ll be strolling down the Tzo on a beautiful day while on your way to class … the flowers blooming … the grass will be freshly mowed … a squirrel will dart playfully at your feet … birds will be chirping … the fresh air will be blowing … tourists may even take your picture … You will be surrounded by the majestic beauty of the mountains and be in the shadow of the Cadet Chapel. You’ll take it all in and think, “This is awesome!” This is your school. You belong here. You won’t be able to imagine how you could have gone to any other school. It’s the best of everything.

    Good Luck and Aim High

EXCELLENT POST from someone who's been there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and feelings Derek! Some young doolie is going to remember this post and its going to help carry him/her through one of those tough nights that they lay in bed and question everything! Good job!
