DS had a call last Friday from our congressman, so he knew it was coming, but he doesn't know it came today because he's been in class all day. Any suggestions on how to make it memorable or special tonight?

    Congratulations...

DD had a LOA so there was no suspense after Sen #2 called to say Sen #1 had nominated her. Still the smile was ear-to-ear.

My sons attended a very large public school which typically sends at least one student to a service academy every year. Nonetheless, most of the students are very ignorant with regards to service academies. Even most of the parents do not know what the "Naval Academy" is. To them, it's like the "Police Academy". They think that everybody who enters the Navy goes to the "Naval Academy".

I can't tell you how many people came up to me and said, "So, your boys decided to join the Navy? Maybe they'll get stationed together. I guess they can always go to college later, huh?"

    No big announcements.

    No fanfare.

Sadly, many thought they were settling for something less than what they were capable of.

Nobody could understand why they were "enlisting" in the Navy when they could've gone to a good college, instead.

    It's almost comical.

See, I'm always a bit skeptical when telling everyone I'm going to USNA. I know it's a great deal, and I love every part of it, and I have told my valued teachers, etc.
But there are kids like my friend from wrestling, who enlisted in the Army, got a 4 year contract to go Airborne Ranger. He didn't get his name in the paper, nothing but a "hope you do well."
I shouldn't be getting much accolades until I graduate and commissioned. Then only I'd feel like I deserve it. Right now, I feel as if I did good on a couple of tests, both mental and physical. Nothing close to graduation from USNA.
    Just my two cents.

EDIT: Sorry, was responding to Memphis. But to the OP, CONGRATULATIONS!!

    CE15,

Great observation and display of humility; that kind of attitude will carry you far. An appointment to a service academy is no easy feat, but does not necessarily mean you are better (or worse) than anyone else serving in the military. Understanding and recognizing the value that everyone brings to the table is part of being a good leader.

You should be proud of your accomplishments, especially when you throw your cover in the air at commissioning, but, as you alluded to, be wary of how you broadcast them.

Don't forget some candidates on here will not end up receiving appointments....

    Thanks All!

Well, DH wanted to go out for burgers and so he put it on the table while DS was picking up the order. He came back and pretended not to notice, just kept talking to his brother...cool as a cucumber, while I had my phone video going (trying to look like I was texting) I finally had to say, "are you going to open it?" These moments seem to be more for mom & dad, at least with my DS!

    US TOO!

DD rec'd her BFE today! best scene was when we took her over to show my pop the folder and he gave her his epulets/belt buckle//cap medallion and name tag all in original box! he also shared a funny story of accidentally piercing his ear while practicing ceremonial sword movements out at sea:smile:
a very very good day - makes the process worth it!
thanks to all for the support and facts contained in these forums - made the waiting almost tolerable!

    Congrats TommyK!

And yes, this forum has been invaluable, and in so many ways a source of hope and encouragement! I am eagerly watching now for those still waiting, and hoping to see the appointment list GROW!

    CandidateElias15, you get it.

I agree w/ jadler -- your attitude will serve you well @ USNA, and as a Navy or Marine officer. It's a darned shame that your enlisting peers aren't receiving the accolades you are. They should. The fact that you recognize that @ your age speaks to your character, and to your future success.
Congratulations to you, and to your classmates who will enter the military.

Best part of the Ceremony. Our Mid and her Marine roomate must have got their feet 12 inches off the ground with the energy put into that throw.
