BFE Just Arrived

Just curious...to those who received the BFE, did your MOC's office call you in advance and let you know of the appointment? When our DS was appointed to USNA 3 years ago, our MOC called first. Our DD is waiting to hear from USAFA and USNA and so I was wondering if it is just up to the MOC, or what the protocol is. Thanks and congrats to all!!! :thumb:

My MOC called four days before the portal updated; I'm still waiting for the BFE.

Congrats, to you and your DS, John!

Great news. Now remember to let him out of chores for the weekend to celebrate, but then jump right back on him. Only now you can use the excuse that your're helping him prepare for the academy. :)

Best of luck,

MedB

CONGRATS!

Great job! Very happy for you!

I have question... Are all the appointments given out now pretty much just LOA's and recruited athletes? When may regular applicants start hearing? I know march is the big month, but do they start sooner?

Weekend Chores

Hi
He has full classes this weekend to finish is private pilots license so no time off for this boy.

Also for those waiting, you portal should show the message below.
Regards
John

IMPORTANT NOTE – As the USAF Academy begins the process of appointing students to the Class of 2017, our Academy Board has begun making early offers of appointment. However, these offers are extremely limited with the majority of offers of appointment to the Academy being made during the month of March for candidates who have completed all phases of the application process. If you have questions on your status, please contact your Admissions counselor.

I'm a regular applicant. I didn't receive a principal or have an LOA but I got my appointment on the 9th of January and the BFE on the 25th.

nice my app was done in december but the review board for my moc didnt pick nominees till early january...

My DS got his BFE on Monday (Madison, WI). His MOC called Friday to congratulate him and give him the "heads up" to check the mail. He is very excited as he had just declined an AFROTC full-ride on Friday to hold out for the Academy. We, too, all gathered around the computer as he clicked "Accept". Then the question about travel popped up. Which leads me to my next of what will be many questions, I'm sure: How much do cadets bring with them? I'm sure that will all be answered when he receives his post-acceptance packet but I'd appreciate any helpful suggestions from those who have "been there, done that." Thanks and congrats to all. Let the "fun" begin...

Congratulations to your son! That's awesome. However, for the benefit of others who may be reading this thread I need to point out that he could have accepted the AFROTC scholarship and still held out for the Academy. Academy appointment trumps a scholarship, the acceptance of which is not legally binding at this point in the game anyway.

Congrats to your son tsband! Am I understanding that your son received a Commander's Leadership ROTC Scholarship? If so, my son was in the same situation and had to decline the 4 year scholarship to hold out hopes for an appointment to USAFA. We are hoping that he will receive a regular AFROTC scholarship through the national board, but that may be unlikely due to his selected major.

Congrats again!

Jill

JJaws, to tell you the truth, everything happened so quickly that I don't even know the exact name. My DS interviewed on Wednesday and got the call on Thursday. The commander told us that each detachment Commander has one special scholarship that is a full ride, a "magic bullet" he said. My son would have been able to go to a few colleges: One in MN, one in Nebraska or any affiliated with IIT (Northwestern is among them but is not a host school). When he was offered the scholarship, the Commander specifically said "Please don't just accept this and then go to the Academy if you get an appointment. Only take this if this is what you'll do." He also asked my son to give his response quickly--by Monday at the latest. Many people asked if he could accept it then "change his mind" but for my son, because of what the Commander said, there was no way he could do that. He would have felt it was not honest because he know if we got an appointment, he would accept it in a heartbeat. We prayed on it and decided to accept it would be to not have faith that other good things would come his way--even if the Academy appointment didn't come. Fortunately for us, just after he declined this wonderful offer, his MOC called...that same day.
I understand that legally, perhaps my son could have accepted the scholarship, but in his heart, he couldn't and we respected that decision.
So now, the "fun" begins. Good luck to your son.

Congratulations to you and your DS! The ride ahead is most exciting! About what to bring; it will be detailed in the follow-up to the BFE. And you will also get a TON of excellent advice from this forum. It was very helpful to us as we sent our DS last summer. "Copies of everything and the clothes on his back" is the quick answer. Keep checking this wonderful place, I guarantee there will be threads on this subject in the next few months. Buckle YOUR seat belts, and watch your DS enjoy his ride :thumb:

tsband,

That sounds very similar to what happened to my son, but his was only for the University of Minnesota (Carlson School of Mgmt). They called him on Tuesday and asked him to decide by Thursday. We bought some additional time until the following Monday. We had to think and pray, as well as do a lot of research before deciding which way to go. He has been preparing for USAFA since 7th grade and in the end, we decided he couldn't just give up that dream and never know if he would have received an appointment.

You are correct in that the scholarship was not legally binding, but if it is accepted and later rejected, it can no longer be offered to another recipient. The moral thing to do was to respectfully decline the scholarship.

All the best and hope to join you in June!

Jill

I respect how your son handled that, tsband. My DD was in a similar situation as a recruited athlete. In July, she was offered a full-ride D1 softball scholarship to a Catholic university in the northeast. The coaches had been following her since 10th grade and were very good to her. But she wanted to hold out for a decision from USCGA.

The USCGA coach told us that it is within NCAA regulations to break NLIs to accept an appointment to a service academy and that it happens often. She explained that the clause was created to protect the educational opportunities of student athletes if they are not appointed to an SA, because the coach cannot guarantee admission.

I understand the premise, but it left our family feeling the same way ... that it would be dishonest to accept the offer knowing she would not follow through if she received the USCGA appointment. And if she had told them, I'll take it, but I will break it if I get the appointment, they wouldn't have been interested because they had to protect their interests too.

We have a prepaid college plan in our state, which we had completed for her several years ago, in addition to her qualifying for 100% tuition at any state school for her GPA (a program funded by our state lottery). We decided that would be her back-up plan, even though it would also mean her only chance to play college softball would be to try to walk on.

We thought it was ironic that the very clause put in place to protect SA prospects also sort of felt like conduct unbecoming an officer because it felt more like lying. I guess it's just one of those situations where it's not technically wrong, but it didn't feel right either.

I believe there is truth in the idea that eventually students will end up where they belong. And fortunately, for my DD, R Day is 143 days away.
