BGO interview

Anyone who has had their BGO interview, how long did it take to show on CIS as received? My DD had hers two weeks ago and it is still showing as only item remaining to complete her application. She was unsure if it went to admissions first and then they updated CIS or if it would change status as soon as BGO sent report.

It is updated in realtime as soon as the BGO submits it. I would give it another 1-2 weeks and then I would have your DD contact the BGO and ask if there is anything else required of her. At a certain point, BGOs will be contacted for delinquent reports....if it is still delinquent after that, the record goes to the admissions board without it.

Thank you for the information. I will pass it along to DD. She felt she did really well on interview and BGO actually confirmed this by email the next day so naturally she would prefer to go to boards with it rather than without. She heads to CVW Thursday so maybe when she gets back it will be done.

She should follow up with the BGO to see if the interview was uploaded to the candidate site. Our DD asked after several weeks went by & it was the only item holding her packet up for completion. BGO thought the packet had been uploaded in the system weeks back. He had to contact Admissions as there was a problem with the site itself. When they had him attempt to upload the item again it was immediately updated in her portal.

Your DD will benefit from what I call 'the art of constant follow-up' on all aspects of this journey. Kudos to her for getting The Academy items completed so that she can now focus on the other college & scholarship applications!

DD spoke with her BGO yesterday and I guess she is waiting for some replies from teachers/JROTC instructor before completing report and uploading. DD asked her teachers to check for email from BGO since they were not expecting it and therefore not looking. Hopefully it will be completed soon.

Do you mean the BGO sought additional references before they completed their report for your daughters application? If that's the case, it seems unusual. I am by no means an authority on the subject but I thought the BGO interview was its own entity and the BGO conducting the interview submitted a report based on their impressions solely. To be holding up the process because their report will be based on additional input from other references seems weird to me.

Yes that is what she told her. She had her interview going on 3 weeks ago, sent a follow up email thanking BGO for taking the time to meet with her and then received reply stating how impressed she was with DD. When she followed up with BGO yesterday she was told that she was waiting for feedback from teachers before finalizing report. I too was surprised by this because I thought her teacher evaluations submitted on application were separate from BGO interview. She had FFR interview for West Point a week later and it was submitted within days. Not really sure what to make of the situation.

Unless something has changed and BGO's are now being instructed to obtain additional references to complete their portion of the application process, something doesn't pass the smell test here. USNA seeks pre-designated references as part of the application and you will need to provide some for your nominating sources but I never heard of a BGO requiring them. I have 2 mids who were interviewed by different BGO's (different years) and neither was asked to give any references. Maybe one of the BGO's who are on this forum could chime in for clarification?

My DD was not asked for references and in fact does not even know what teachers were contacted (aside from her JROTC instructor who BGO specifically mentioned in email). I don't even know how she would have gotten contact information for her teachers without asking. I haven't said anything to DD but it seemed off when she showed me BGO response. Just hoping it doesn't take too much longer to get submitted.

No. Do you know how the BGO got the names and contacts of the teachers?

No. Only thing we can think of is BGO took notes of the classes she was taking this semester and went on school website to find teachers contact information. DD had no idea BGO was going to be contacting her teachers and isn't concerned about it since she has had most of her major subject teachers do LOR's for her anyway. It's just frustrating that the rest of her application is complete and this is holding it up.

Wow...I wonder if the BGO works for OPM (joking).
Hopefully this is resolved soon. Either way, once the application is complete...BGOs start getting nudged.

My application was completed weeks before my BGO interview, I tried to get an interview for a very long time before finally was able to arrange one. It took many emails, phone calls and emails to my admissions counselor. I have followed up a few times and keep getting put off, I think my BGO has some personal problems or something else going on

Any thoughts as to why my DD's BGO might be doing so?

I have some thoughts. To my way of thinking, extraordinary candidates (and that could mean extraordinarily good or bad) necessitate a little extra research. I never assign a candidate the highest or lowest overall rating without speaking to another objective and independent adult first. As an example, during the last cycle, I had a candidate who I thought deserved the highest possible rating. I placed a call to the school's athletic director and to the head of the college counseling office to gain additional perspective on the candidate. In that case, the candidate had made some pretty lofty claims about how his individual leadership had affected one of the school's athletic programs. I thought it worth checking with the AD to see if he shared that perspective, and in fact he did. In recent experience, I have not felt inclined to give a candidate the lowest overall rating, but if I did, I would also talk to others.

I am not sure that this is the same as asking a candidate for references, which I do not do. Nor am I sure that this is what is going on in your daughter's case. I'm simply sharing my own practice.

As to the question of how the BGO might have gotten the names and contact information of teachers, that's usually fairly easy to find on the school's website. I try to visit most of the schools to which I am assigned on a periodic basis and meet the head of the guidance office. In my example above, it was the guidance office who put me in touch with the AD.

Thank you for some insight. The BGO did tell my daughter she was very impressed so maybe she is just doing due diligence and I cannot blame her for that. My daughter was very honest in her interview as well as on the resume she provided to BGO so we are in no way concerned about her reaching out for validation, especially if it is to support a very high review. My concern was more in the fact that we didn't want her teachers not responding to hold up completion of application since it is final open item. DD did make all her teachers aware that they may have an email from BGO and asked if they could make responding a priority so fingers crossed her CIS will soon show complete.
