Anyone at the Academy that can give us an update as to how the Black Forest fire is affecting USAFA life, would be appreciated.

Things were fine near the academy this morning. Black Forest and Falcon is where the damage and smoke are. The winds shifted in the late afternoon and the first went south and east.

Wild Fires

You may want to try the local newspaper or news television stations. Gazette.com, KKTV, and KOAA. They were very informative last year during the Waldo Canyon fires.

Thank you both. I have KKTV online but they are doing a variety of types of coverage and I was looking for the "view" from THE Academy. Everyone's working hard! :thumb:

DS was at FERL (Field Engineering Research Lab) site on Monday and they were evacuated for a few hours. They are back to work now.

Black Forest Fire

25 miles to the north, we are smelling the smoke (and it is strong) and visitbilty is very limited. All outside rec activities have been canceled, and our county farigrounds is overflowing with evacuated animals

Facebook

If you go on Facebook and "like" the "US Air Force Academy (Official)" page they are posting pictures and updates pretty regularly. They did a great job keeping it updated last year as well.

On a practical note, if you are coming here in two weeks for In-processing, do not assume your current hotel reservation will be honored. The hotels are full of locals, many of whom have lost their homes, so they won’t be going anywhere for quite some time. It may be prudent to secure a second (cancelable) reservation in the Denver area to ensure you have a place to stay upon arrival. There are many hotels in the Denver Tech Center, commonly referred to as the DTC, which provide quick entry onto I-25 for the trip south to the academy. (Just under one hour in favorable traffic conditions.)

The local and out-of-state firefighters are doing an amazing job trying to contain the five fires currently burning in Colorado.

alternate lodging

To piggy back on parentalunit2's posting. Pueblo ( where I live) has numerous hotels and restaurants and is about 45-50 minutes South of the Academy. I would advise staying in Pueblo as opposed to Denver, Castle Rock area as the fire may get close enough to I-25 for them to shut it down going southbound. Here is the link to the Pueblo Chamber of Commerce. http://pueblochamber.org/
Please feel free to ask me any questions about the area. Safe travels all.

The fires are east of USAFA and are not directly impacting operations at this time. Indirectly, many homes (including those of USAFA sponsor families and USAFA employees) have been destroyed and many more remain evacuated voluntarily and involuntarily. parentalunit2 and sheriff3 make excellent points about staying in COS around I-Day. Hoping for better news soon.

Updates regarding USAFA specifically can be found at: http://www.usafa.af.mil/news/fire.asp
