Goaliedad,

Interesting theory. You do have a lot of good points here. Another source of complication is, some cadets are applying to multiple service academies and some ROTC applicants are applying to multiple branches (AROTC and NROTC, NROTC and AFROTC, etc). I even know of one kid who is applying to ALL service academies and ALL branches of ROTC scholarships. It just gets crazy.

I do sympathize with the battalions: they would like to fill their available scholarship quota with the BEST and MOST COMMITTED candidates ("committed" meaning, it's the kid's #1 choice and s/he is not applying to the service academy).

I better clarify my earlier statement....

The ROTC units that called were asking if his College Application to that school was complete (not his arotc apps!)

Yes, an hour of disappointment followed by....that school sucks. He felt better when his alumni interviewer was just as stunned. Then when I blogged college confidential and read the stats of other kids accepted/rejected it made absolutely no since. Some kids with perfect SATs and #1 rankings were rejected, a great kid with NROTC scholarship was deferred and many kids with MUCH lower stats but different backgrounds were accepted. go figure.

He's already been accepted to #2 school, and #'s 3-7 are all really great, too. Each school has been son's #1 choice and some point during this process.

Has anyone pondered the possibility that CC will try to "load balance" the awards by reducing the number of schools a scholarship winner gets? That is, in the past a scholarship might be good any of 5 schools. But this year, the offer is only good at 2 or 3?

That's what happened to me. I had selected 5 and I got back two in return

OK. Thanks, Josh.

It kinda makes sense. Fewer moving parts for CC, the batallions, and the candidate.

Thanks, I was confused as to whether you meant his ROTC application or College application.

Now, I'm not sure what to make of the 2 schools asking if the applicaton is done. Could it be a simple followup to see if he is punctual (always a good thing), or could they be on their way to admissions to check on his likelyhood of admissions?

It is good to hear that he really likes all 7 schools, though. And with all the strange results at school #1, you know why all the sages at CC talk about loving your safety school.

For goaliegirl, admissions is probably the least of her worries. She has the stats to be admitted to any of her schools (above the bottom quartile at all 7, in the top quartile at 2), none of which are highly selective. And even if she is the unlucky one, if the coach really wants her (kind of a prerequisite for going), I'm pretty sure that admissions can be worked.

We are still waiting on the 1 EA school (not due until Dec 20 - we think we made that school's paperwork deadline), with the rest being rolling admissions. Unfortunately, it seems that her GC has held up the transcripts for the other schools waiting for next week's finals to be added even though we asked for them to be sent at Thanksgiving. Given a fairly steady GPA and course load throughout her 3.5 years there, I can't see that there is any advantage in waiting for the next report card.

cjs: my list had 5 schools I would be happy to go to, they were NOT at the top of my list. However the PMS at #1 school told me there had been a mistake so I was able to correct it.
And now the PMS from #2 school who I DID NOT get offered a scholarship to is calling to check on me to see if I had submitted my college application. He said he was going to talk with the admissions department.

If the schools are interested, it will eventually work out.

The PMS explained it to me like this.
I accepted a scholarship to school #1. One of their slots is held for me. If I change my mind or don't get accepted, I can switch it to another school. Then the slot that was held for me from school #1 is given back to cc.

Ouch! That doesn't help us when we aren't sure which school's coach really want her. We were hoping for 3 or 4 to make sure that there was overlap between coach preference and ROTC selection.

The good news is that the school that has been the most positive with ROTC has had the the most positive email from the coach. Just have to remember, she only needs one. She only needs one.

I'm glad that it all worked out for you and that you received a slot at your #1 choice school.
Good luck!

Now I'm getting server errors again when checking the scholarship status, not again!
