If you have never gone to see this memorial- it's in the rather out of the way little Virginia town of Bedford- about half hour east of Roanoke. there is nothing about Bedford that's really special to look at except ... that in WW2 - the town had the unhappy distinction of having the highest percapita casualty rate in the country as a result of the 116th Inf Reg ( Va National Guard) 29th Division landing as an assault Division at Normandy. The monument is great achievement to remember a cause and levels of sacrifice on the part of the entire population that the nation hasn't equalled IMHO since.
So RIP Sgt Slaughter- and thanks for your service in war and Peace.
