I know this question is difficult to answer but if one had to guess what is the average wait time from commissioning to BOLC? Both AD and reserves/NG. Thanks

That is a hard one to answer. A lot will depend on what Branch the cadet is given, some have a quicker turn around and others can have a long wait for some. My son Branched Aviation May 2015 and did not report until Dec. 27th 2015. My older son Branched Aviation May 15th 2012 and reported June 1st 2012. So you can see it ranges all over the place. I believe the average can be somewhere around 3 months with some sooner and some later.

Wish there was more info to give but it seems to depend on the training pipeline for each branch depending on the year.

Too many variables for a valid answer. Branch dependent. Follow on course dependent. Follow on assignment dependent for some branches. Backlog for training. ADA and Finance for example only have 3 class dates per FY. AMEDD (Includes nurses and Med Service for BOLC) has five class start dates per FY for AD. Infantry has 9. Coming out of ROTC it is more difficult to get an early start date unless you are a DMG. However, if your school graduates in April some May/early June dates (if offered for that branch) are available because WP graduates in late May and most take some leave before going to BOLC.

This is a link to the ATRRS website. Just key through the security warnings. Put C20B in the Course Number and the FY you are interested in reviewing. A few FY 18 are already posted though most are not.

Edit: one data point. DD has not yet attended BOLC but has been on AD for 2+ years. Won't likely attend until 3 years 6 months since commissioning via ROTC - but this is an outlier that impacts averages.

    AROTC Parent,

What did your son branch that has had such a long wait time for BOLC, just curious.

The wait time is not intentional by HRC or the new 2LT - but they occasionally have scheduling issues. Commissioned upon graduation as Branch Unassigned for Med School Ed Delay. Acceptance to Med School on AD (despite reminders) did not trigger HRC to schedule BOLC en route. Took a new Oath as Med Service upon arrival to first duty station. So, no BOLC until years later.

Every year I hear about Reserve/NG 2LTs that have not been scheduled for BOLC at the 2-3 year mark.

If you want some examples...My daughter commissioned in May 2014 and was at BOLC on July 1st. My son commissioned this May and has a BOLC date of Sept 26th. In the meantime, he's performing the Gold Bar Recruiter duties at the school he graduated from.

When do the cadets receive notice of their BOLC schedule? We'd like to send our DS and roommates (all but 1 are AROTC) on a trip for graduation but are hesitant due to BOLC ...

Not sure if it has changed since '15, but my son learned in late March/early April that he would be going to BOLC on May 17th, after commissioning on the 9th. (Un)fortunately, he also contracted mono in March, so was able to get his BOLC date moved to July to allow for a little recovery.
