Boots for Beast and Garrison

My DS is emailing WP and I'll call on Monday if necessary - we need to know what the deal is so braking in can commence!

Khybers at Cadet Store

If you go to the USMA website and the Cadet Store there is an order form for Khybers. We ordered two different sizes and sent one back. I know it is nice to be able to try them on prior to ordering, but this is an option. We had also gone to our local PX and found many others. DD tried those on to get an idea as to fit by brand and style. Good Luck

My cadet didn't feel the boots needed much breaking in at all. His boots fit well and were very comfortable and he had very few problems during CBT. I would be much more concerned about getting his feet used to the low quarters. That's where the "breaking in" needs to happen.

No Bates M-8 -- only Delta 8's -- no khybers at all - no Belleville 310s only 320's -- help!

Where are you looking? Try the deltas on for size, then order the M8 from aafes. The M8, M9, and Deltas are made on the same last and are very close in fit.

Or do similar with the 320 & 310's.

The boot memo is close. There is an unsigned version and hopefully the signed one will go out this week with the rest of the admissible mailings.

Concur, the low quarters are more important to break in.

Thanks - tried on the Bates Delta 8s and then ordered online the M8s. There were no instructions that I remember about the correct type of low quarters - any feedback about that topic?

something like this: http://www.marlowwhite.com/80-100.html

those look like they might be a little warm, but should meet the standards. there are probably cheaper ones available from the post exchange.

Non-shiny low quarters. My cadet wore a much smaller size than we expected and we were glad that we had them fitted in person at the PX shoe department. He walked all over our neighborhood breaking them (and his feet) in.

Past years the specified low quarter was the M206H (Mens) and M210P (Womans) from AAFES. This was also the early guidance for 2017 from the official USMA Parents Page

The Men's model can be found here:

http://shop.aafes.com/shop/Product.aspx?dept_id=3030&PFID=M206H

And Woman's:

http://shop.aafes.com/shop/Product.aspx?PFID=M210P&dept_id=3040

This is the "DLATS Men's/Woman's Military Oxford". DLATS means Defense Logistics Agency Troop Support which means it's a standard issue item.

Normally it's a particular Bates model, (I believe it's the E00968 Mens, E00769 Womans, but would have to confirm). It's also commonly sold in uniform stores, etc.

Any PX/BX can order these, and the fit is almost identical to the "High Gloss" version they normally stock, also known as Chlorfams/corfams, etc. Unlike the high gloss, which are plastic, the leather ones will stretch a bit more, but otherwise are identical and made on the same last.

Or just order from AAFES. Free return envelop if the wrong size, or you can return it at any PX. Candidates cannot order directly from the website as they don't have their ID yet, but there is a number they can call. I have the number from past years, but you'll need to confirm for this year in case it changed.

You'll have a better chance at finding the M206H / M210P at Air Force posts, as they (apparently) are the main service that still wear them.

Note that the AAFES price on the low quarters is under $50, yet you'll pay over $100 in most surplus/uniform stores.

Similar info for boots,,,,,
Bates M-8 (1450)

Belleville 310

I note that AAFES does not show the smaller sizes (Woman's) for the M-8 while the 310's are listed down to size 3.

The Khyber was not sold at AAFES, but is the Belleville TR360. It's a lighter weight boot, and can be bought at the Cadet store or ordered by calling them. It's from Belleville's cheaper line, and are Chinese made, so do not expect them to last as long. (Which is also why they are not DLAT boots) But they are also cheaper to purchase, MSRP is less than the AAFES price on the other boots.

Here's the Khyber at Belleville:

The 2nd pair issued in past years has been the DLAT hot weather boot listed on the AAFES page.

Dixieland's input on sizes is dead on. The PX & C-store staff indicate it's not uncommon to find 1-2 size reduction over what the candidate thought they wore, and occasionally 3 sizes. And that also that they run true to fit on the brannock foot measuring device if fit by someone who knows how to use/read it.

for low quarters, I wear the lowest model "Caps" brand, in the same size as my regular shoes. I'm almost considering buying another pair of these, even though I'm allowed corframs because they have become so comfortable now.

In the beginning though...that's another story. Something that helps is actually shining your shoes before you come, the more you push and pull on the leather, the softer it gets.

What I did, was used a lower gloss shine to build up a base layer on my shoe that didn't look "like glass". The base layer also helps with protecting the leather from scuffs and getting dirty. After I had put 100 or so coats of that on, I could easily bring it to a glass like shine during beast, but kept it dull and "new looking" on R day to not attract attention.

Heat helps too, you can wear the low quarters, put parade gloss on and rotate a hair dryer around your foot.

The combat boots sold now are almost like tennis shoes, they don't need too much breaking in, it's the feet getting used to the weight.

Do the boot letters also authorize the purchase of the low-quarters (durashocks?) from AAFES or only the boots? Thanks!

The official boot letter is not signed yet, hence it is not on the candidate portal. Maybe this week along with the rest of the admissible kits. There will be an email when it happens.

Boot Letter

I apologize. Our FFR had emailed out an unsigned boot letter dated May 15th on Monday. This is the boot letter but it has not been given an authorization at this time. My DS was excited thinking he received this as a precursor.
