Does anyone has experience to getting the waiver from NROTC with DQ code History of bowel resection? My son is a very healthy young man, besides the fact that he had bowl resection surgery due to small intestine obstruction when he was 11. He was awarded NROTC scholarship and currently he is waiting for the waiver.

I don’t see why he wouldn’t get a waiver if the doctor documented the reason for the SBO and also no complications like issues with bowel movements or nutritional deficiency.

The cause for the bowel resection(Meckel’s diverticulum) isn’t DQ like it would be for inflammatory bowel disease.

The USN Manual of Medicine (MANMED) says Meckel’s, if surgically corrected more than 6 months ago, is not DQ so you should be clear time wise.

The concerns with small bowel resection are chronic abdominal pain in the future due to adhesions and nutritional deficiency (could cause anemia).

Just out of curiosity, did your son have blood work done as part of the DODMERB exam?

The DoDMERB exam didn’t request any blood work. In addition, the requested remedial was sending all the documents from the children’s hospital which involved his operation.

I asked about the blood work because anemia could be a potential “side effect” of the resection. Certain nutritional deficiency (B12, iron, etc) can result from bowel resection which in turn make your son anemic.

I don’t think that’s the case though.

I think he’ll get the waiver. Surgery was a long time ago. Reason for surgery was not for something really bad. No sequela of the procedure. I’m hopeful for your son.
