I'm a junior in NY so I'm in a very competitive region for WP (I live less than an hour away). I was recently accepted to attend Boy's State and I was wondering how many people who attended Boy's/Girl's State and were accepted/rejected. I know it isn't an automatic appointment, but I also know it can help and the SAs view it more favorably than their summer seminars, but how highly is it looked upon?

    Boy's State and the SA's

The SA's look very favorably at those who attend Boy's / Girls State. It can show leadership, if you participate there. So, to that end be active, when you attend. Have a great time and good luck.

Definitely take advantage of it if given the opportunity! It will help your application, you will probably enjoy the experience and learn something about yourself at the end of the week. The focus is on leadership, civic responsibility and working with others who have different opinions -- all things you need to be successful no matter what you do after high school. My DS attended last summer and has received his appointment. Like you said, it doesn't guarantee anything, but it definitely adds (in the SAs eyes) to your WCS and well roundedness/competitiveness as a candidate.

My DS went last year too. I did not know it adds value to his application. He also will be receiving an award in April from the American Legion for his achievements in BOys State. Do you think we should let admissions know?

Yes, definitely! Congrats to your DS -- did he go to Boys Nation?

I should add that Boys States adds value to your application like being a captain of a Varsity team or other leadership achievements.

If I may, don't worry about it. There is no one thing that will give you competitive advantage. West Point considers every aspect. So if you attend Boy's State but don't have good SAT scores, your Boy's State attendance won't help. If you have high SAT scores, but no leadership experience/roles, high SAT scores won't have your leadership grade.

You can look the class profile and see what appointed candidates did, but it's a snapshot only might not apply to you (in a competitive district).

DS went to Boys State (NY) this past and loved it. Normally a kid who keeps to himself wound up running and was to elected office (mayor) and also submitted legislation that was adopted as part of party platform. Very proud of him especially since his primary focus has been athletics in HS. My words of advice to him before he left were to make the most of it and he did

We're also in NY. DS went to Boy's State, but was not selected for SLE at USAFA or USMA. Received early appointments to both. Good luck!

I'm from VA and I went to Boys State last summer. I loved it! It was the best week of my life! I ran for attorney general and lost in the party convention :(((( But I participated in moot court and placed 2nd overall with my team! I took a lot from Boys State: leadership, an urge to serve others, confidence, and a better understanding of myself! Boys State was awesome for me and I believe it was a big help in me getting my appointment to West Point! It will certainly help you as well. But for now, all I can tell you is to make use of that 1 week!!!
