Are the Bugle Notes really hard to memorize or even an important thing to prepare for? I have not seen them mentioned on the website or in any of the other books I've read. I am just curious.

Mark: I assume you mean bugle calls - the short tunes used to signal an event like reveille, attention, or taps? The answer is no they are not hard to learn.

Bugle Notes are like Reef Points... A book of gouge such as Code Conduct, Alma Maters, history, fight songs, General Orders, and a ton of others things Cadets have to memorize. When you see Mids or Cadets standing in formation staring at tiny books that is what they are.

Bugle Notes, or Plebe Knowledge, are indeed a booklet full of a wide variety of info. My DS tells me that there is plenty of time in Beast to learn them, and while some cadets arrived at Beast with quite a bit of knowledge already learned, it didn't set them at any distinct advantage, although for those who (a) took the opportunity and (b) were allowed to by cadre, it presented an opportunity for those to help others who may have been struggling. That said, not to worry, you will have plenty of time and "motivation" to learn the required knowledge. Not a priority right now.

// PS, my DS just graduated -- WOW! what a ride //

My 2015 (just graduated) DS told my incoming 2019 DS not to spend his last few weeks before CBT studying Knowledge. He will have ample time to study it beginning on R-Day. But knowing my 2019 DS as I do I would bet that he has already read and and memorized at least some of it.
