c/o 2019 wait list

DS finally received his letter of rejection and is very happy with his alternate plan A. He'll still be pursuing his desire to become a Naval Officer in San Diego and couldn't be happier.

Good luck to those still in the game, and keep us posted so we can celebrate you.

Go Navy, Beat Army

DS just got his snail mail copy of the wait list turn down letter that he had received an email of on Jun 1st...looks like from the postage meter stamp on front of envope, it was mailed on the 16th and we got it today here in CA.

DS was waitlisted for 2019 and finally received a TWE (in email form) about three weeks ago. Got a call yesterday, however, from a BGO (not our original BGO, who stepped down after the class of 2019 cycle, but one who is new to us). He advised our DS to submit his final grades immediately. Our heads are spinning. DS is committed to Cornell Engineering with a NROTC scholarship. (Other DS is USNA class of 2017 and desperately wants his little brother to be at USNA with him). I-Day is Wednesday!! Has anyone else received a call like this? Any thoughts?

I too was wait listed for the class of 2019. I received my TWE this week. Last week I also had a meeting with the Dean of Admissions for USNA. He said that the class was already about 10 people larger than they were hoping and that they have not had to use the Wait List yet this year. Considering this, I would say that the chances of 10 people declining their appointments this late is highly unlikely. His BGO might be looking out for him for the class of 2020 or maybe a prep school or foundation.

Also, since your DS is doing ROTC and was wait listed this year I'm assuming he has a very competitive application like mine. The Dean told me that as long as I maintain A's and B's this year in college that he has no doubt I will receive an appointment to the class of 2020, which I assume would be the same for your son. Which is good news if he plans on reapplying.

Not to burst your bubble, but I can almost guarantee that if USNA Admissions wanted your grades ASAP, your RD would contact you directly (vs. through the BGO). And they would have asked for them weeks ago. Also, unless something has changed this year, once you receive an official turndown from USNA, it is permanent. If there is still a potential for a very late admission, which has happened, I believe they keep you on the WL until the bitter end. You can imagine the chaos that would ensue if USNA "reversed" even one turndown to an appointment -- there would never be any finality for any candidates.

My guess is that the new BGO believes you intend to reapply and is eager/anxious. For your sake, I hope I'm incorrect about all of the above.

And BTW, congrats on NRTOC/Cornell. What a great option!

DS was a college re-applicant and member now of Class of 2019

I have also heard through very good source that class of 2019 is oversubscribed- making admittance from WL very unlikely.

I assure you, you're not bursting any bubbles! Cornell is a fabulous option. DS got an email today from the man who called thanking him for his quick final grade submission (he was copied on the grades sent to admissions). DS was mistaken after the phone call -- his title wasn't BGO, but rather something like "Naval academy information officer, deputy director" (never heard of this...) Not sure what the purpose was, exactly, but we've heard nothing else from the Academy today. Unfortunately, my 2017 mid is in Europe on his leave block so we can't even talk about it with him. Luckily, this DS is super excited about helping to strengthen the NROTC program at Cornell. Semper Gumby!

The formal name for the BGO program is the "Naval Academy Information Program" and "Naval Academy Information Officer" is the formal name of the volunteers (like me) who participate in that program. "Blue and Gold Officer" is our unofficial title.

I have never heard of anyone called a "Deputy Director". Area Coordinators are assigned to a large geographic region, and they are the direct representatives of the Candidate Guidance Office in their region. If the region is large, the AC may appoint a Deputy Area Coordinator (again, like me), but that's an unofficial designation. My guess is that the person with whom you are corresponding is a BGO who also serves as a Deputy AC. I don't know why s/he would use the title "Deputy Director".

I can't add anything to what usna1985 said above. If there was some chance of your DS clearing the waitlist, I would have expected a direct call from the Candidate Guidance Office, not the BGO. We BGOs are pretty much out of the 2019 picture, and in the early stages of working with 2020.

Thanks, Suddebsam. . Good to know who it was who called. His email did make reference to the Area Director, whose name I knew from out past experience. I wonder what they're up to??
