Cadets are too young...

Perhaps a fossil? Other than TPG I'm suspecting that most of the forum members wouldn't appreciate the "Royal" portable typewriter that I got for an 8th grade graduation present, nor the really cool TI SR50 Calculator that I got for HS graduation that - for about $150- did square roots.sin and cosin! High Tech!
Excuse me while I go recharge with a geritol.

If you really want to see a perplexed look show a slide rule to some of these young dudes..:shake: I remember my two young sons finding and bringing me the old Pickett slide rule I had been issued in my first year at school.. "hey dad, what the heck is this..?"
"Well fellas, back before we had electricity, that's how we worked math problems.."

Prehistoric.. yes. Neolithic period, to be exact:wink:

Remember when pocket calculators first came out they ran around $50, and then the going wage was about $4 an hour in my household...only the rich had them:smile:

Your brain may have lost battery power but the slide rule never did! I remember the Beatles landing at NY and then first appearance on Ed Sullivan. Remember first Elvis on the same show. Remember Eisenhower dedicating Sault Saint Marie for one of the first President appearances on TV. Rotary Phone and old Party Lines. Pick up on two rings or three for the other party. Remember my first Presidential vote in "68". Who you ask??? Quess!! When it comes just hit me with the shovel so I don't get up and then bury me deap. As Johnny Cash said "I Am A Highwayman". "I will survive". It is still good to be above ground and taking in O2.

:shake: ...I agree..they are too young. We are not getting older. I say if they can't shave out of necessity every day and name the entire cast of Gilligan's Island then they are too young. And they get younger every year!
Well, you'll be happy to hear this is one 19 year old who qualifies in both :thumb:

Oh, by the way:
I don't think it about cadets being too young, it is about some of these young people being protected by their parents.

In actuality, 90s kids are not "too young" as you would say it. However, younger kids, like elementary school level, probably would not understand any of these references.
I stand by this, us 90s kids were the last to have it down right...in fact right up to my specific grade. I remember halfway through my senior year talking with my friends looking at the grades below us and we were like "they don't get any of the references we make, have no respect for authority." For my high school at the very least, there was a clear cutoff in generations.

Damn kids today with their loud music, underwear showing because momma never showed them how to use a belt (or dad how to effectively use a belt haha)

...granted I never "experienced" the last one.

LMAO...I have news for you. A kid who is 18 is in the same generation as one who is 16.

I've heard this one before. My dad used to say, whenever he'd get sh*t for being one of the older engineers at his office, "Hey, we went to the moon on a slide rule."

Sorry eagle, but I had the same reaction as scoutpilot. LMAO.

All of my kids at the same point as you said the same thing and between my laughter I would remind them that was them 3 yrs earlier!

Guess what come July, the cadets will say the same thing about you! It's life.

Of course the real sign of generational difference is easy to see via conversations.

1. Did you hear who got an apptmt (friend) (16-21)
2. Did you hear who got that career field? (20-25)
3 Did you hear who got a specialty school...AF TPS or T-Birds? Or who got married? (25-30)
4. Did you hear who got promoted? (30-40)
5. Did you hear who is retiring? (35-40's)
6. Did you hear who got an apptmt? (your kid) (45+)
7. Can you believe they are retiring already? Or Did you hear who's child is getting married? (2nd career) (50's+)
8. Did you hear that so and so died? (60's+ hopefully)

So there is my way to determine which generation you are in. Unfortunately I am at stage 6 and 7 is starting to rear it's ugly face.:thumbdown:

Yes! I've graduated to number 2! though, I believe the married one is (18-40) lol.

As a candidate for co2016, I don't think that we are given enough credit. I do remember when there was not a computer in my home. I also remember having to rewind the tape because there were no DVDs (how else was I going to watch The Lion King for the billionth time?). I have also watched my fair share of Seinfeld and used a floppy disc before. Oh and "Ferris Bueller's Day Off" is a really funny movie and I have heard kids in my high school quote lines from it. In actuality, 90s kids are not "too young" as you would say it. However, younger kids, like elementary school level, probably would not understand any of these references. So, yes in like 3-5 years your post would have some more value to it. :thumb:

P.S. I hope I didn't sound like I was taking offense to anything posted and I am not attacking anyone. I actually found this thread pretty funny.

Who was Theodore Cleaver?

That's an easy one.

Try who is, Davey, Fred Mertz or Gladys Kravitz?

No googling allowed.

Bonus points for Davey, everyone old enough will remember him because it was the only show as kid worth tolerating on Sunday morning besides Wonderama, and even at 8 it was like nails on a chalkboard!

Hornet, the married one should be placed twice because it also fits in the no.5 area, but at that point it would be Did you hear who is getting re-married?:shake:

Typically the response is to whose ex-wife? It is kind of strange because you go to your 1st op base and they are married to one wife. Divert to other bases, come back 10 yrs later they have a new wife, and you know her too because she was married to another guy when you were with them as LTs.

No lie, I can count 5 off the top of my cranium who did this in the last 5 yrs of Bullet's career. AWKWARD!

For people my age (30s)...if we are sticking to TV...

Who are Alex P. Keaton, Roscoe P. Coltrane, and Gordon Shumway?

A young republican, a sheriff's deputy, and ALF.

Full points.

Follow up-

Alex P. Keaton's three siblings?

Name of Roscoe's dog?

The species for which ALF/Gordon Shumway has a particular gastronomical fondness? The name of the member of that species who resides in the Tanner household?

I can only think of Mallory Keaton right now.

ALF loved cats.

Flash and Alf wanted to eat the cat

ALF loved cats.

The Keaton children were Alex, Mallory, Jennifer, and (post shark-jumping, with fast-aging) Andrew.

Roscoe's dog was Flash.

ALF liked cats. He had a particular desire to eat Lucky, the Tanners' cat.

Well done...

Touche. I can, however, say with pride that many of my papers in junior high were typed on my father's venerable IBM Selectric II typewriter. Maybe I'll order the cadet to find me some typewriter ribbon...

Speaking of typewriter ribbon, where can you buy them? I have an old typewriter, and want to use it, but the ribbon is missing.
BTW, I am young, but have heard of all the things you guys have in this thread up to ScoutPilot's touche post.
