Cadets - In the Army or College?

How Soon We Forget

JAM, you have depicted very well the attitude at WP towards cadet's status in the 'real' Army. All of us who were around at USNA when Adm Fowler took the reins from Adm Rempt know the emphasis, and the resistance encountered, that Adm Fowler placed on the fact that the USNA Midshipmen were part of a military at war. Perhaps the AFA and CGA just don't get it. Why don't we just leave them in their ignorance and ignore them.

oldgrad, you said:
In certain cases, service academy time does count toward retirement and also seniority for pay purposes.

What are the certain cases?

What are the certain cases?

In our case, my husband did a year at the prep school at USAFA, and was enlisted for the year, this counted toward his time in grade and service years to retirement. Perhaps, that's what he meant?

Anyway, good points JAM. These are helpful tips/knowledge for parents who are new to the military environment and service academies. And imo it's a triple whammy when it's the first-child-going-off-to-college experience, too.

The day my son raised his right hand and took the oath was one my husband and I will never forget. We both served active-duty and it meant a lot. Though he has yet to actually serve in the "real" CG, he's still a part of it.

I have not been on the site long enough to know all the old gang, but wooooahh. You sir are rude.

WOW....

just WOW:eek:

Personally I don't see how you can equate a Midshipmen/Cadet with an Active Duty Soldier, Airmen, Coastie, Marine or Sailor. They are the ones that endure the real deal, the daily grind, the military BS, The deployments, The hardships, the war... etc...

Although they do not endure "real danger," there is no mistake that they endure the daily grind, some "military BS," and hardships. Ever heard of the Grey Period?

Calling them Active duty Soldiers, Airmen, Coasties, Marines, Sailors just doesnt seem right to me. Kinda takes away from the real deal.

Well they are considered active duty and it takes nothing away from any other active duty soldiers, airmen, coasties, marines, and sailors.

My nephew who is a SSGT in the Army does not hold my son's status as a cadet against him. They talk about many things they have in common. They both want to serve their country, they just took different paths.

Plenty of parents commenting, still waiting on a midshipman or cadet....who have always commented on another thread about the same subject. Their responses were not in line with JAM's, but that isn't unusual.

Ha, you haven't been to USNA in a while...have you?

SAF Members,

We appreciate, as always, a friendly discussion on this forum. However, we will not allow threads that stray from a discussion to remain open.

Thank you.
