DD is a junior in HS with the following math track:

    Year 9- Algebra (Honors)
    Year 10-Geometry (honors)
    Year 11- Algebra 2(honors)
Year 12-College Algebra and Trig (dual credit college course)

She was going to take a Trig course at the local college over the summer so that she could take Calc 1 and Calc 2 her senior year. Thought this would look good on application and better prepare her for USNA.

She was accepted into NASS and Girls State which are the first two weeks of June. The problem is that the college class starts the first week of June. She can't do both.

She is faced with the decision of having to skip NASS and girls state to take the class. I think I know how to counsel her, but wanted some more experienced advice.

Plebes math starts in Calc 1 so I think it would be best to complete pre Cal in HS. You could possibly do an online trig class. Someone can correct me but Plebes that start in Pre Cal may be headed to summer school after Plebe year to do Cal 2.

    calc

So, if I understand correctly, she is right on track. If she stays on her current track and does not take trig over the summer, she will take college algebra/trig as a senior in high school and the next progression is calc 1 and calc 2 her freshman year of college.

She could take pre calc as a senior, but that is not the accelerated route at her school. It would be a non honors class. It is an entire year of pre calc.

According to DD, the college algebra she will take senior year is the "pre calc" portion which she will take first semester senior year and then she will take "trig" second semester. It is a dual credit college course for both semesters and is the honors track.

She took the ACT for first time in Feb and scored a 27 on math portion. Taking it again in a couple weeks.

Maybe the difference is semantics and it sounds like she is on track. I was thinking in terms of my DS' HS math sequence, and that is certainly not the only valid sequence to get you to Calc 1 at USNA or another school.

Plebes take a math placement test, and they will put Plebes into the right slot based on their ability - Pre Calc, Calc 1, Calc 2, etc. It sounds to me like she is on track to start Calc 1...

Best to you and your DD.

ya she needs Calc. Also 27 needs to be more like 30, or better.

I believe at my school it is possible to take Trig and PreCalc at the same time. One may be considered an elective in the schedule. Explain the situation to your guidance counselor, I'm sure they will offer some helpful advice.
