Call from Annapolis

So sorry to hear about your son; your family and son are in our prayers. Please keep us posted on how he is doing.

Your son's companymates will help him get through his recovery period. My DD's roommate had a number of illnesses (none too serious, thank goodness) during their Plebe year, and DD and others in their class brought food to the room for her, helped with making the rack, brought class notes (during Ac year), and so forth.

Don't worry about detailers and their attitudes (if you have been). Your son has had plenty of time to build a good reputation. The "first set" detailers definitely pass on their opinions about their Plebes to the "second set." So long as your DS has been working hard up 'til now, and he does as much as he reasonably can after surgery/recovery, all will be well.

Best wishes for a speedy recovery!

So sorry to hear the news about your son. I can truly emphathize with how you are feeling...except of course with the distance factor! My DS actually broke his ankle earlier this year and was fully recovered to make it through Induction Day. Hopefully, they will cross paths and swap stories. My DS will definitely be able to encourage your son. Hang in there!

Phone call from DS

We had been told that our son would get to call us briefly before surgery tomorrow morning, but he just called my husband's cell phone. He said he had five minutes and no more. (Not time to call mom, just get the facts to his dad asap-which was probably just as well) He said he has been in his rack this whole time since the ankle break and is reading his Bible and some newspapers, but the medication they are giving him makes him sleep a lot and he is not aware of time due to no clock or watches. He says his roommates bring his food to him and he is grateful. They are carefully watching the swelling to go down. He says the company has been very helpful. He did not know what was going to happen after surgery but told his dad that he doubted he could play Sprint football. (something we knew would be hard for him to swallow) Surgery scheduled for 10:00 Eastern time tomorrow morning. All in all he was in good spririts but wants to be running with his platoon and in the thick of everything. I am not doing as well finding out he has been in his rack the whole time. I don't know what I envisioned....maybe him hopping along to classes or cheering his squad on during Damage Control....now I feel kind of sad and anxious for tomorrow, but I would never let on to him. Time to go out and get busy! Thanks again for all of your support.

Our prayers are with you. Please let us know when he is in recovery and how everything went.

We are praying for you and your son. I can just picture him singing in his dressed up whiteworks! These are amazing kids and he will be back at it before you know it. Please keep us posted.

lovethenavy--

Have been thinking about you and ;your son this morning. Have sent up many prayers for you as well. Like you, it breaks my heart to know that he has laid, sat in his bunk for the last few days. There were many tears as I read that just thinking of him.

Please keep us all posted. I know it is going to be a rough day for you.

The surgery should be over now and I pray that all went well. My older son and I have both broken ankles and it's truly important that the swelling goes down and they rest. It is comforting to know that they are allowing him the time to heal properly. Keep us posted.

Update on DS!

Friends,
Surgery went well. The surgeon called and reported he had put six screws in the bone and a plate. Our DS got to call us after he had come out of recovery. He was sitting in a recliner with his leg and ankle in a splint for now. His voice was groggy, but strong. He said that he was taken to the hospital by a duty driver in a large van with a detailer who stayed with him the whole time and waited during surgery for him. He reported that she was very nice and he was so glad to have her with him for support. He said that he got to pray with a chaplain the night before. DS's plan was to have the roommates throw down his rack from above and he would sleep on the floor. No first story hospital bed for him, at least in not his mind! Thank you, thank you for all of your prayers, support and PM's! He is not out of the woods yet as the surgeon said they will watch for infection, etc., but for tonight I can sleep!

I guess not being a mother it is hard to understand all of the condolences being thrown upon you. From my perspective, it is good that your kid got ankle surgery, and it is good that they are doing well post procedure. It sounds to this point like they are going to let your kiddo stay at the zoo, which is great. Other than that, I don't quite understand all of the sad and somber responses you are getting on this forum. It sounds like he will be able to press on and continue with the program which is ideal. Best of luck to him.

Things are looking up!

I agree with marvin...from where I stand I don't see where all the sadness is coming from...all I see are positive things:

1. Your DS is in good spirits
2. Very qualified doctors are looking after him
3. upperclassmen are responsible for him
4. other plebes are looking after him
5. he is staying where he belongs :thumb:
6. he is being given time to recover
7. did I say he was in good spirits :shake:
8. this will only make his resolve and will stronger
9. he is not your little boy anymore
10. he is now a man and his courage proves that

Take the frown of your face, smile and start beating that chest again!
You have one heck of a plebe that anybody should be proud of.
Incidents like this can only make them stronger and more determined!

Frankly speaking...I would be more worried and angry if this happened in a civilian college.

Oh yeah, BTW, we are still praying for you and your DS when we go to church this afternoon!

GO NAVY!

marvin, you are right, you aren't a Mom, so maybe you don't understand, but anytime ANYONE has to undergo surgery, its a stressful, worry-some time for anyone close to that person. Having to go thru it now, after how hard he worked to get to USNA, makes things even harder, and all of our hearts are breaking for this plebe, because he would give anything to be healthy and working hard along side his classmates. We all feel his mom's pain, because she feels his pain, not just from the physical injury.

We are happy to hear he came thru surgery with flying colors, and know he will be crutching along beside his company mates in no time!

scada, I don't think its sadness, but more support. If you look thru this thread you will see that everyone told her that her son is in great hands. Her son is in great spirits despite the set back, and mom is maintaining her sense of humor thru all of this. I think this has been a very uplifting supportful thread.

Like you said...

I wasn't disagreeing with anybody, I was just putting a new spin to it...I think we all feel the same way...we are all here for each other!

GO NAVY!
:groupwave:

Wow

Wow! Marvin and scada, I went back through and read this entire thread and I really thought that it was an entirely positive and uplifting thread, where the USNA family/community was sharing their thoughts, experiences, and support. I did not even think twice about posting something like this because I had no one to ask about what was in store for my son, what kind of things would go on, etc. We are new to all of this and it is scarey to be 2000 miles away from your child who is undergoing surgery, no matter how routine you think it is. Believe me, this is no mama's boy, but, yes, he is still by child who I care about and worry about, even though he is an adult now. I would never post something to gain sympathy. I truly reached out to my fellow posters and they gave me the help and feelings that family is not alone, we are not part of the USNA family. This has helped us all and gain a bond with other USNA parents.

I meant to say "we are NOW part of the USNA family". I think the emotions got the better of me.

"We are Family..." Can you hear the music?

I, for one, am glad you shared! Who knows when another of us will go through something unexpected. Glad to know you've felt supported and encouraged. How is that boy of yours anyway?

We are back in action after a great phone call on Sunday. DS told us how he heard 3 pops in his ankle on the E course, and how furious he was for letting this injury happen....thank goodness for his boots, he said he got up and ran for the finish line before realizing he had a problem. His spirits were great. Again, thank you friends for getting our family through this. Short cast applied 0600 this morning and no more SIQ! Case closed.....we are back in the thick of things once again!!!!! :thumb:
