Looking for a few parents to give some suggestions toward a good (SLR/digital) camera and lens combo for an upcoming plebe parent. The future midshipmen is a recruited athlete as well. I would be interested in something capable of taking long distance outdoor shots along with the required close-up pictures throughout the yard. For now, assume a 1000 budget.
    Thanks

I would say the Canon EOS 400D would fit the bill, being one of the least expensive (and most popular) D-SLRs. With that budget you could get the camera with stock lens and a mid/low price long-distance lens.

I like the Cannon's easy use. Nice camera. Here's another to consider.

At Best Buy, this camera comes with an 18-200 zoom which will get the kid's eye lashes. The thing I like about this camera is the built in stability sensor. Helps when you've got the larger lense.

I would ask if you are looking for a point & shoot or an SLR. I'm assuming you want digital?
