    What I sent:

    Sir,

Is there a possibility that I can be chosen to attend USMAPS if I do not get accepted to USMA this year?

    Email from my RC:

    Kevin,

You are way too academically qualified for USMAPS. I wouldn't worry that much - everything looks good in your file and I hope to have you good news by the end of the month.

    "I wouldn't worry that much" - can i be cautiously optimistic?!!!

Feel free to be optimistic, but don't think it in any way a guarantee. It's easy to be over-qualified for USMAPS in academics, but still not good enough to be admitted to West Point based on say, leadership or athletics. I'm not saying this is the case for your specific file, it is just a possibility. Best of luck, though!

Just like everybody else, I'm trying to find anything to hold onto for hope.

Hope doesn't require something to hold onto. You can be hopeful with nothing to hang on to. You should take the email at face value.. do not be overly worried. That is something different than being cautiously optimistic. However, if being cautiously optimistic floats your boat then do that. Note that whatever way you treat it, it doesn't change the facts... you're waiting to hear like a few thousand others.

    Good luck.

Being overqualified for USMAPS means Civil Prep might be better for you if you don't get in. The way the email is phrased though, you should be cautiously optimistic. That sort of question is something you normally would be asking for later when it's getting close to the final cut.

Very similar response from my RC. However, he said "You are on my USMAPS list". I am not really sure what that means. Does it mean no appointment? Or am I getting a USMAPS offer?
    Anyone have any advice????

I would think it means that you were selected for USMAPS.

Just curious (new to the forums) what does RC mean? Is it some type of regional counselor? Or a type of representative?

Yes, it's your regional coordinator. When does one get notified of USMAPS? I hope I am not stealing this thread.

RC = Regional Commander = your main admissions officer at West Point.

USMAPS offers are sent at different times throughout the cycle.

    USMAPS

You can not be considered for MAPS if you are 3Q'd. You have to be academically disqualified.

WOW, I wonder why he'd tell us that. DS is 3Q'd.

WeinerDog, is it possible your son is being viewed as an athletic recruit for next year?

If you are 3Q with a nom, the possibilities are: offered, QNS, or Civil Prep. USMAPS is only for candidates that they think process great leadership potential but need a year of focused academic prep to get them ready. Civil Prep is only a few every year (40ish). Your RC should contact you (probably once most of the offers have gone out) if they are considering you for one of those spots.

I suppose that could be the option. He is an athlete but I dont believe he has the recruited ability, though he is a varsity letter earner in a couple of sports. Civil Prep could be the RC's perspective. I am 100% clueless about civil prep. The FFR believed he would have one of two options....an offer or prep. He stated with his years doing this he believed either one of the two would be his outcome. Personally, I believe that there is so much competetion and so very many bright students that the "norm" for the FFR's might have gone out the window.

If he was recruited, he would be working through the coach
