    Im currently a junior.

I have just reviewed the application packets for the MOC.

I am in what is considered a competitive area. The MOC's get over 250 requests for noms for each of the SAs. Because of this the MOCs will not let you rank you SA request and can only pick one. additionally-they will not duplicate noms. In other words that wont put you on the slate for USNA and USMA and you cant go on both MOCs slate..

If I like USMA slightly better than USNA but my profile makes it more likely that I will get into USNA-do I just request USNA and not request USMA at all?

BTW- The reason that my chances are better at USNA than USMA are my ACT scores.
    USMA looks at all areas:
    Reading 25
    Science 31
    MATH 34
    ENGLISH 35

    USNA looks ONLY these areas:
    MATH 34
    ENGLISH 35

Not sure if that is true about USNA only looking at those two scores, but even so, it is early in the game. When is the deadline for your nomination application?

I would focus on improving your reading/science score throughout the summer and on learning about the Academies and the services they support. This should allow you to make a more informed decision.

These forums are a great start:thumb:

You appear correct about which specific ACT sub-scores are looked at. I just checked my DD's USNA web portal. For ACT, it only shows the Math and English scores.

thanks for your reply. I am sure about what scores are looked at. The MOC packet is not due to November. I am signed up for three more acts. so it may improve-im just pondering the "just in case..."

Im going to USMA SLS and applied to USNA NASS (not heard yet though)

Im thinking engineering major-and for right now would be happy with either and its just a slight preference. Id like a 1969 ZL1 Camaro a little bit more but if someone gave me a 1970 454 Chevelle I'd be totally happy.

Sounds like you've researched this quite a bit, so you are aware that your high test scores in Math and English alone won't get you in anywhere--on the academic side, your grades, class rank, school profile, whether you took AP/IB if offered at your school, etc will all be part of it too. And they will look at activities, sports, leadership positions, etc. too. I think all academies want a well-rounded person who can handle a large load vs. someone who has great grades/test scores but did nothing else but study. All that being said, make sure you apply for both senators, your congressman/woman, VP, and Presidential if eligible. If I remember right from last year when my son applied, I don't think the VP limits you to one choice so that could open up opportunities for noms to more than one. And hopefully you're still applying to both senators so you have the option to be considered for either even though you will only end up on one slate or the other. Lastly, you say you'll be happy with either, but I liked the comparison someone on these forums made last year when kids in the same situation as you are in were trying to decide which academy to rank first--do you eventually want to be in the air, on the water, or in the desert? A very simplified comparison, but one that points out differences once you're out of an academy.

You still can apply to both (and pray for a VP nom for example for the choice you put second). There is always the possiblility of getting prep school for the other academy as well even if you don't get a nom there.
