After the first year? For instance, you get offered AROTC and decide to switch to AFROTC the sophomore year. Is this unusual? Ok? Thanks in advance.

CadetMom: We're offered a AROTC scholarship, want to know the possible swtich to AFROTC Scholarship or NROTC equivalent after one year.

TIA!

Interservice transfers while in ROTC are possible, but you can't transfer one service's scholarship to another. They are all handled independently. You would need to withdraw from the AROTC scholarship and apply anew for the Air Force scholarship. If you truly prefer Air Force and feel fairly sure you would switch your sophomore year, I think the more honorable thing to do would be to turn down your AROTC scholarship, join the AFROTC unit, and apply for the 3 year Air Force scholarship during your freshman year. You would incur no penalty for rescinding your AROTC scholarship as long as you haven't started your sophomore year, but it would kind of be a shame to have the Army pay for your freshman year when you have little intention of completing your commission for them.

CadetMom: Thanks for the info, great insight!... While we have no preference for which service branch right to serve in now, this is a tough choice as we want to reapply for all 3 big academies next year. We got waitlisted for both AFA and USN and AFROTC offers us the better plan! Go figure. I have a feeling we would develop a strong camaraderie in the AROTC and even have a difficult time accepting an academy appointment after a year of hard work.
It will be a great adventure regardless.
