Hi all,

I have a quick question. I got offered a Candidate Visit Weekend through an email 1 or 2 weeks ago. I was a little confused though because I'm currently a junior in high school and haven't started my application yet, and it was my impression that generally these things went out to people who had already started their application. I really want to go but I don't think I will be able to make it, so should I call them and let them know I can't or was this just a mistake?

Thanks,

Bear-

Did you apply to the summer STEM program or submit your preliminary app for NASS yet? That may be how they got your name/info. (Or perhaps someone you know submitted your name -- JROTC, counselor??? I don't know if that's even possible.) You can always call, explain the dates don't work and ask for another date. My DS went to CVW in April of his junior year, so they do send out invites to juniors. And there is more than one CVW offered per year -- it seems like there are ~3 +/- per semester.

The only thing I can think of would be that I did the Summer STEM. Luckily, I was able to clear up my schedule and will be able to go.

Then summer STEM is where they got your info, and apparently they think you will be a competitive candidate if they are offering you CVW so early. Take full advantage of the 3 days. Ask a lot of questions and enjoy!

Great to hear you worked out the schedule. For anyone receiving a CVW, whether a Junior or about to graduate Senior, take the trip if it is offered, especially for anyone deciding if this is right for them or between two SAs. STEM, sports camps, NASS are all great to getting you on the yard, living in Mother B, eating in King Hall and a lot of other items that teach you about USNA. Nothing compares to the exposure you will get at a CVW when there are 4000+ Mids operating on the yard. You get a true sense of the daily life of a Midshipmen, what classes are like, what Plebe life is like, etc.

For those who will have CVW during the dark ages (from now until spring break time) remember that this is generally one of the roughest patches of time for a Plebe. They just made it through their first semester and had gotten used to the battle rhythm of their classes, squad, etc. Now it has all been shaken up, they had a few weeks to recover and see their friends and family, and now they have a bigger academic load, its cold, dark and lonely. For those who go post spring break, you will see the campus start to liven up again and Plebes see the light at the end of the tunnel. Ask to speak to upperclassmen while there, their perspectives will be very different then a plebes. Heck most of them were probably excited to come back and see their friends and be "home." I know that sounds shocking, but for firsties and second class this often happens! Also speak to someone in the majors you are interested in. They can really help explain what the academic load is like, etc. If you are thinking of playing a sport or participating in a club activity most plebes for find you someone to talk to about those things. Just ask, they can't read your minds!
