Car?

Never

As a Plebe you are not allowed to have a car. Having a vehicle on campus is a privilege reserved for 1st class only. If I'm not mistaken there is also a restriction regarding driving while on liberty within a certain distance from the academy.

If you make it through 1st trimester you might, that's MIGHT, be able to take the test and be allowed drive one of the vans for TMs.

As a plebe, when will I get first use of my car

Now that is good. I am pretty sure that will be nil until recognition. Then, you will most likely not be able to use it until you can find a place to park it.

For Sale: one slightly used 1994 Honda Accord, 180k miles. :shake:

As a plebe technically never within like 50 miles of the Academy as I recall. In any case you won't need one either. Also as noted, the only mids who can park on campus are First Classmen and there is no on street overnight parking in the Village of Kings Point so even as a Third or Second Classmen you'll need to locate a parking spot which isn't that hard to do but is a consideration.

DS had a car for three weeks during the summer. He found driving around Great Neck to be an adventure. After we brought the car home and he went out to sea, we received an envelope from the City of New York addressed to DH, with pictures of our car merrily running a red light on Northern Boulevard in Queens and assessing a $50 fine. (DS wasn't driving - he lent the car to someone else. He'll never do that again.)

$50 smackers? A mere bag of shells, Norton....:shake:
I think Bloomberg and Company figure if they make the fine low enough, they won't have people challenging the robo-cameras taking pictures at the intersections. I guess it helps the city's budget.

Yellow light then red light...one second in between...if you see yellow you better stop or you will be receiving a ticket...because poof light is red.

The light in question is at Marathon Parkway on Northern Blvd going away from the Academy towards the Cross Island Parkway. I have gotten a ticket and so has my DS. Now I slow down as I approach the intersection and hope there is a red light so that I can stop. Even if it's green, I slow down and look right at the crossing signal to see if there is a blinking sign that that light is going to change. There may be other intersections like this on Northern Blvd., but it's the only one I know of. You can see the camera overhead, especially if you are driving the other way from the Cross Island on Northern Blvd. towards the Academy.

Yes, if you are just entering the intersection and the light goes to yellow, it immediately goes to red and you get stuck with a ticket. All new parents should be made aware of this intersection. Google Map it before you go to the Academy so you know where it is. The ticket is at least $25 and could be more now.
