Does anyone have any tips for doing better on the car? Also if you can do more than the max in an event can you get extra points?

If you search this forum under "cfa" you'll find lots of tips.

NO, you get no extra points for exceeding the max. The instructions for the test make this clear. All you do is tire yourself out so you'll likely do worse on the run.

If you can max out in everything . . . well, you can do no better.

This forum will not allow searches of three letters or less, such as CFA or SAT, or ACT. We have tried searches for these important aspects of academy application and had no luck.

I understand there has to be a limit, or the searches would find lots of matches that may not relate. It would be nice if the forum could allow searches for these and other short items. They were hard to find much info on, but it is out there.

Fair point . . . I don't often search. You could try words for elements of the CFA, such as "basketball" or "crunches" or "mile run," etc.

Folks say technique is required for the Bball throw. For crunches and push-ups, repetition is key. If you keep doing them, you'll improve. As for the run, I would check with the track coach at your school and get a workout plan.

The key to doing well is to practice the test under test conditions -- allowing only the allotted time between events.

DS was in crazy good shape and decided early on that he didn't need to practice throwing a basketball.... big mistake. Even though he was strong enough to max/near max several CFA events (including PushUps and PullUps), his Basketball Throw was embarrassing! I believe there is a sticky thread on the USMA forum about this event. It seems like it really is all about body mechanics/technique.

The other thing I can suggest is variations of exercises. Because of the high reps required during workouts for many of the events, the boredom factor is pretty high for teens. So help your candidate by introducing them to all of the variations available and mix them up. Eg 1 set of regular pushups, 1 set of spider man pushups, 1 set of one-leg pushups, 1 set of elevate pushups interleaved with 1 set of side situps, 1 set of flutter kicks, 1 set of twist sit ups, 1 set of pike ups, and 1 set of regular situps. You get the idea. There are probably several dozen variations of pushups alone available to keep things fresher and more interesting.

Hope this helps and good luck!

Get in touch with a coach to score early.

This coach, if a REAL coach, will work with you to improve. My DS used his ROTC Colonel who is in better shape than my DS. He tested him repeatedly and I believe this helped him do better, getting over the testing, scoring jitters and they worked together to improve as the Colonel pushed right along side him - picture both doing pushups, sit-ups, etc.

It was more of a personal challenge and I'm so thankful for it.

Best of luck!
