Last night my son got a call saying he was being offered a spot in the CGAS program. He was a little stunned as he was thinking he was going to be deffered. Wealso hadnt even researched this option. He was told he would be getting info in the mail shortly.
He makes his own descisions and I dont want to push him in any direction. But I would like to be educated enough to offer advice if asked. Right now I know very little of this program.
Any good info would be great or a point in the direction to find out all I can. We have a Phone # to call but would like to have a list of informed questions first. Thanks

If the "S" in CGAS means "Scholars" then the CGA will send to either the New Mexico Military Institute or to Marion Military in Alabama. This is a great program. These folks are enlisted into the CG at the pay rate of E-2. They get credit for time serverd as the "posting" is for an active-duty billet. They also get credit for longevity raises for pay. They take college classes that are first-rate, university-level courses. Finally, their appointment rate (at least at NMMI - I don't have accesss to MMI numbers) is close to 100% if they come back for a second semester. We have some losses so I can't say it's perfect - but it is real close.

Most importantly in my opinion is the extra year of maturity, and the time/stress management skills that they pick up.

    Sir
I believe the S is "scholars" my son use the word prep school then into the CGA. Do you have a choice of the two schools? If you are enlisted do you have an "obligation" if you arent accepted into the CGA? How long is the program for?

As some of your questions are more "Coast Guard" specific than "NMMI" specific, you may want to talk to the USCGA's contact for the CGAS program:

    LT Chris Culpepper
    31 Mohegan Avenue
    New London CT, 06320-8103
    Tel: (860) 701-6322

Agree with your son doing most of the asking! One of my "other" jobs here is, CGA Admissions Partner. Anytime interest in the Academy (or one of its programs) is generated by the more by the parent than the candidate, it makes me wonder who really wants the appointment. I know parents want the best for their sons and daughters (I am a Dad, and Granddad myself) but genuine, sincere interest by the candidate is much more reassuring of committment and follow through.

    Good Morning,

I am the Prep School Liaison for the CGA Scholar Program and would be willing to answer any questions you or your son might have. We also have a USCGA Scholars group site on facebook that has information and pictures that might help you out.

CGA Admissions assigns prespective CGA Scholars to either Marion Military Institute (MMI) or New Mexico Military Institute (NMMI), the student does not have a choice. We try to set each Scholar up for success and do our best to give each Scholar the tools/opportunity to excel. If they complete the program succesfully, then they earn an appointment to the CGA. The bonus is that they earn E-2 pay and benefits while in the CGA Scholars program.

    My contact info is:

    Chief Todd Lonergan

    Parent's perspective of CGAS

If you have any questions that I can answer from the parent's perspective on CGAS, don't hesitate to PM me! It was a very positive experience for my DD and certainly went a long way towards insuring her current success at the Academy.

Thanks everyone. Got a couple of calls last night from CGA people. Getting alot of good info. Looks to me like my son is a lucky young man. Wish I had these options when I was his age. Instead I did four years in the USMC
