I found that my status has switched to "hold". What are my chances? What can I do to make my chances better? I'm from a state that doesn't usually have a lot of representation at USMMA.

ZachL, be patient. ((you were not denied)). I know you'd rather find out NOW one way or the other, but sometimes this is how it goes down. Some hold candidates will move on to be accepted... Hang in there. Best of luck to you! (Keep checking your status as well).

I found out from the one of the coaches that I've been in contact with that USMMA is going to have one of the smallest classes in recent history next year. I guess I will be patient.

Zach, also keep updating your application as things come up. All conference, sectional or state honors. Let them know. Scholastic awards, new test scores, keep your package updated.

Whar does Hold really mean

My son's application was reviewed but still says "application on file". So there must be a difference between Hold vs just rolling over an application to the next review cycle.

When we did a campus visit last year, there was a senior who was was on Hold, which I thought was like a wait list. But that was over spring break. It seems very early to see Hold status, unless it has some other meaning.

Could it have something to do with the coach? Which sport, if I may ask?

Not too soon for application reviews.

My DS status changed to "HOLD" just last week. He is not a "recruited athlete". He does not have a nomination (YET...we should know next week). He has a complete application, except for the CFA. He was a bit disappointed when it changed from "on file", but I reminded him that it was NOT a "no". He just got accepted to his plan B school that has strong ROTC program. He says he will apply again next year if this year falls through. But too soon for that right now, just waiting on nomination.

I'm in both track and football. I received a call from my Congressman last night telling me I was his principal nomination. I was also wondering if there is principal nominations for the USMMA.

Meaning of Hold

Okay, I read some old threads and I think I answered my own question. From what I can tell, Hold is a very good sign, especially at this early stage. It means that they want you, but the allocation for your state has already been filled. So they have to wait until someone declines their appointment to free up a slot for you. At this early stage, I can't imagine that Wisconsin is full. So my guess is that Hold is their way of moving your application to the top of the file but they don't want to commit until they have had a chance to review other applicants from your geographic area.

Application on file is unnerving as DS is in very competitive area and I feel he is rapidly losing advantage of the early application. It wasn't as early as I would have liked, but most of it was complete by beginning of September. It means that package has been reviewed at least once and been passed over.

small class

Did they say why it will be one of the smallest classes in recent history? Is it due to budget cuts or a lower wash out rate?

Mman5247, it appears from your post you are from Wisconsin. I am the proud parent of a 2015 WI M/N, who was in your position two years ago. I'm also an active member of the WI Parents Assoc. If you have any questions throughout this process, please feel free to PM me. Good Luck!:thumb:

Switched to "Hold"

Just received a call from Congressman at school yesterday granting the nomination. Checked the online status and it had switched from "app on file" to "hold"; though KP had not yet received word of the nom.

Only things pending are 7th semester grades, CFA and official notice of the nomination.

Home is western Missouri. Not a big merchant marine state, however a lot of riverboat-barge people on the St Louis side mean there's at least some competition.

Any ideas on chances?

Thank you

Privateer,
We also are from a great seafaring state (Illinois). Our son made it all the way through and graduated in 2011. Working for MSC somewhere in the middle east.

Privateer,
Once DS recieved his nom we forwarded a copy of the notification to admissions at KP. But they didn't update his file that nom was recieved until they received it from the office of the MOC. Ours was slightly earlier than most because MOC was retiring and moved up the nom process by a full month. That actually was good for us because it shortened the wait. Don't read too much in to the hold status at this time. But as always keep your admissions packet updated of any noteworthy new accomplishments. Happy holidays. I know, all you want for Christmas is and L-O-A, just an L-O-A. ( must sing to the tune of, All I Want For Christmas Is My.......)

Nothing New To Report

Just checked my status for first time in a few days and my"hold" status hasn't changed. There is no update on the nomination either, although I received it 11 days ago. I'm not going to sweat it yet. They might be waiting for my 7th semester grades I guess (which I don't get until Jan. 22nd). If it takes until April to decide my fate, I may get a little concerned. I am visiting several other schools in January so it will be a good diversion for me and my folks.

renovations vs the big bad rumors

dcmom3... quite possibly the class size has more to do with them renovating the barracks and less to do with the rumors of budget cuts or wash out rates. btw, wash out rates exist no matter what the class size is. the academies are getting more and more qualified applicants every year and their numbers for those wanting a spot keep going up. the reality is that they only have so many beds. when half a dorm is closed due to renovations, that cuts into how many beds/ rooms they have, and thus how many they can accept. when the renovations are completely done, then the class sizes should go back up.

ZachL- in your case, no news is not bad news. you need to just be patient. :thumb:

Hold=interested  Be patient as Aooga15 says. Remember March 1st is the application deadline and for the most part you will be "racked and stacked" for your State. Make sure your information is up to date and add anything new to your portfolio. Principal nomination from your Senator or Congressman/woman will certainly move you up the ladder !! Most of all be patient:thumb:

Pretty sure it's some of both; the last several years beginning with the now graduated Class of 2009, the entering classes Test Scores and Class Rank averages improved year over year; additionally the Classes of 2012 - 2015 all had more than the usual number of acceptances by candidates who were given LOAs so their entering Classes were larger than prior years. Subsequently, my understanding is those classes also had lower "washout" rates throuh their time at USMMA, inclusive of this current year.

As far as I know and can tell, the actual authroized budget for Operations and Manitnenance (which is sperate from the Capital improvements budget) has actually increased over that time, though I'm not at all cognizant of if the anticpated expenditures for "per student" type items has increased, decreased or held steady. As far as we all know their is only two more dormatory that requires upgrade and improvement and ithey're the smallest ones Clevland Hall (as of last spring Reg Row) and Band Company so not sure if that has any influence at all in the situation or not.

Besides, as all current Kings Pointers learned last spring, in a pinch, they are tough and don't even really need hot water in a barracks to consider it fully habitable

Blue chip

So if something gets added to your file, how can you be sure that your packet will get reviewed again? In DS case, SAT scores arrived right around the time he was put on hold. Hard to say whether they had them the day it was reviewed. For sure, they did NOT have his blue chip which just came in last Thursday. How can I get them to take a second look? If he gets an LOA in March, it may not help if he doesn't get the nomination. On the other hand, he's a shoe in for the nomination if he has an LOA. So timing is a big factor here because the congressman has all the results and is making the final determination right now!

Does anyone know if the admissions panel meets at fixed times (like NROTC boards) or if packets are reviewed on a rolling basis?

Maybe he's going to be stuck on hold regardless until a spot opens up?
