My son received the NROTC scholarship to his first choice - Duke. But he then received a rejection letter from Duke admissions. He has received an acceptance from Auburn, but is awaiting UVa and Vanderbilt (which don't come out until April 1). Should he put in the change request from Duke to Auburn now and then wait for the other two and potentially have to resubmit another change request if he decided he wants to go to UVa or Vandy?

He should contact someone to find out what the process is to obtain a transfer this year. In the past I don't think they started addressing them until 4/1, but order in the queue may be important. It doesn't sound like he can go wrong with any of those schools. If it were me I'd try to grab the bird in hand... but that's just me.

I would wait until early April instead of doing twice? Think many kids are in similar situation? It was so hard to rank schools 1-5, you want the best school as #1 but then again need to be realistic, hard process:(

Is Duke Admissions aware that your DS received the 4 year NROTC scholarship? Maybe, just maybe he might have a shot at Duke still, especially if the Duke PMS of NROTC pushes for him.
There is nothing to lose by asking the PMS if there is any recourse.

We contacted the Duke ROTC LT who welcomed him aboard after getting the notice of assignment and she said there was nothing they could do. Probably made an error in applying early at Duke and getting the rejection first. My son notified Auburn, UVa and Vandy that he had the NROTC scholarship in hand and the next day Auburn said he was accepted (originally according to website notices wouldn't go out until Feb 15). UVa and Vandy replied that they have noted it in his file for the April 1 notification. Hey, if they are going to get reimbursed at 100% of the tuition by the Gov. it probably makes a difference.

If your son received 4yrs ROTC scholarship I am pretty certain he will get accepted to Vanderbilt:) I know two of my sons friends who got into Vanderbilt ED, think they are top 10% of class:)

    Blessed mom,
Are the two friends of your DS accepted into Vandy doing NROTC as well?

Congratulations on the NROTC scholarship, well done. Vanderbilt was very military friendly when I was there, but it has really moved up in rankings, and is one of the toughest schools to get into these days. UVA and Vandy have fought each other in College World Series for last two years. Great place to go to school, very livable.

No they are not ROTC, but they are engineering majors?

Has your son called Auburn, UVA and Vanderbilt NROTC departments lately to find out how many scholarship slots, if any, they still have? I would have him do that before putting in the change request.

You did not make a mistake having your DS go ED at Duke. For that school and others with huge endowments a NROTC scholarship has zero influence on admissions.

He submitted change request from Duke to Auburn and has been put on the wait list. He let them know he is waiting on Vandy and UVA (April 1 notification date). My brother is the CO of the NROTC unit and said to submit Auburn for now and then if USNA turns my son down he can see what happens at the other two universities and go from there.

More on this discussion, although my son chose not to attend, after he notified Texas Tech that he'd been awarded a 4-year AROTC scholarship, his email notification of early acceptance came within 48 hours. Coincidence? Who knows.
