I received a 4 year AROTC Scholarship to VMI for civil engineering, but am seriously considering switching my major to international studies and political science (what I've actually wanted to do all along). I wanted to do engineering for a while because of the money and the fact that it is a solid degree, but I can honestly say that after two years of college engineering classes (statics and solid mechanics, fluid mechanics, etc.) that I loathe engineering and really don't think it is right for me. I called admissions to ask about a switch, but I was told to wait until matriculation because IS is full. So if I change my major, should I get any problems from cadet command?

You get one free major change that is approved at Battalion level. Anything more and it has to go to brigade, and the chances of approval are less.

My son is a 4th at VMI, he rec'd a 3 hear AROTC scholarship. Prior to Matriculation he contacted Cadet Command about switching from Mechanical Engineering to Civil. Their response was he's, but no engineering, no scholarship.

Any idea how long the first "free" change of major takes?

I would follow up with the ROO at VMI or Cadet Command and we cannot tell you what will or will not be approved. I just wanted to share my son's story.

If you are required to stay in engineering, civil is very different than mechanical and might be more to your liking. Good luck, I hope you can switch to what you want!

If your scholarship award letter does not specifically state that you have a "STEM Scholarship" your BN can approve a change of major. As far as the process it is fairly standard for the student to provide a 104-R with the request and a Cadet Action Form (CCF 131-R) requesting the change. I suggest (as always) that you initiate communication with your ROTC detachment and work through the details. While the information provided is fairly accurate there are some specifics that will be dictated by your ROTC detachment.
