Quick question. DS applied to schools and for scholarship in mechanical engineering but after his overnight at VMI and talking with department heads he feels like he may be more interested in civil engineering and the Corp of engineers upon commissioning.

I'm certain changing his major at VMI won't be difficult, but how would he do that with his scholarship? Or can he not change it?

My interpretation of this is that it will be OK. Not sure how you do it, but I'm sure the PMS could tell you. Civil engineering is still under the engineering list on the list of majors. CCX (civil) vs CKX (mechanical).

I wonder if he needs to do anything since mechanical and civil engineering probably fall under the same discipline.

What does PMS stand for, obviously not what I think it stands for LOL! DS will know, I can ask him when he gets home.

Do not call the PMS. He is the guy in charge of the ROTC Battalion, and is way too busy to be worried about one of his 100 incoming freshmen wanting to change his major. Call the ROO or just wait until he shows up on campus and starts filling out the paperwork. The ROO or the HRA or his MS 1 instructor are going to be the folks that help him navigate the paperwork. You are thinking too hard on this one. It's not a big deal.

I am a second board winner and I decided I wanted to change my major about three weeks ago. I wanted to change from Chemistry to Applied Health Sciences. I was worried it was going to be a lengthy process but it actually just took a week to have it all figured out, first I called up the college, then I emailed the ROO. The ROO told me right away that it would not be a problem! So I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Do not try and change your major before you even start school. A major change within tier one and two is no big deal, but you can't change majors until after your 45 day grace period at the beginning of your freshman year since mechy is tier 1 and civil is tier 2. Also, the classes a freshman engineering major takes are all the same regardless of major so it's no big deal waiting.

John, you may be confusing this with NROTC, AROTC does not reference tiers like NROTC.
