AFROTC scholarship numbers

How many total scholarships are going to be given out by AFROTC this year?

... unfortunately I was not awarded a scholarship ...

Were you reboarded? Or denied? It's possible it make take a few days to do all the updates I suppose. You still have the three year Army to ERAU, right? (yes, i know you wanted to transfer to Penn)

T-Bone. Be sure you understand what a 4 year type 7 is per the discussion earlier in this thread. Also pay close attention to Pima's response. Depending on where your DS wants to attend school you could be looking at 3 year Army vs 3 year Air Force. Read the fine print (unless you already have of course).

Will do, thanks! The AROTC was only for UT, our in-state U (TN) and the way I understand it he has to go to an in-state school for AF too if he takes the four year option. So, it would probably be the same school either way. I really appreciate you, Pima and everyone else who contributes to this thread. You have all have been our biggest help in all of this.

You're on top of it! I hope, for your sake, the kid leans towards Air Force! Ahhh... to fly like a bird!

VirginiaDad, make sure you contact UVa admissions and notify them that your son received the scholarship. We've done that for both NROTC and AFROTC scholarships that my son was awarded this year. The admissions department will be very quick in updating your son's admissions file. Every little bit of an edge helps when trying to get into UVa. Congratulations!

VAReporter - Thank you very much for the tip! UVA is so competitive that all help is definitely welcome and appreciated. Do you happen to know much about the AF Detachment at UVA? Thank you again!

UVA Det

Did your DS did his interview with the O-6 at the Det? He is a Purdue Grad and has his degree in Engineering and is a B-1 pilot. He took over this past summer (2012) after serving as a wing CC. I have only spoken with him once, but he seems tor really care about the cadets that he has. If I remember correctly, he is but one of six full birds in all of AFROTC Dets.

rupewvu, My son interviewed with the Lt. Col. An absolutely stand-up officer. The Air Force should be honored to have individuals of this quality in their ranks.

VirginiaDad, Judging by the quality of officers leading UVa's detachment, our kids will be in good hands if that's the path they choose to take. My daughter is currently a 4th year at UVa and I have nothing but great things to say about Mr. Jefferson's university. My only concern for my son is that his major is aerospace engineering and their aerospace department is pretty small. I believe there are only around 270 undergrads in the aerospace department. My daughter's engineering department (civil) is fairly small, also. But the quality of education is hard to match. Even though my son has been a high performer, with a 30% acceptance rate we are still waiting on pins and needles for his acceptance letter.

Type 7 Scholarship

I live in Illinois, and I received a 4-year type 7 scholarship. If I go with AFROTC it will be at the University of Illinois which has a tuition rate of $16,754 per year for in-state tuition in my desired engineering major, and there are fees of $3,500 dollars per year. How much will my 4-year type-7 scholarship cover?

VAReporter - Great to hear that it's a quality group of officers there. UVA is a great school. i'm a little partial as my wife and I are both Alumni. She graduated from the Ed School and i studied (systems) engineering. However, as tough as it has gotten these days, I'm not sure that either of us would have gotten in based on today's standards. Good luck to your son! He sounds like he's a strong candidate and a great kid. Thanks again for your feedback.

One thing that I found interesting is that the AFROTC Detachment has an overnight visit program (early April, I believe). However, the ARMY ROTC Detachment doesn't have something similar. Tech (Corp of Cadets) has an overnight program and they give you a chance to meet/speak with any of the ROTC programs as well as the VPI Company (non-ROTC). I think those overnights give the kids a really good glimpse into what the program is like.

Denied - should get letter w/in next few weeks according to portal.

Oh well - you win some, you lose some - that's how I see it. Maybe that's suppose to be a sign, I don't know haha.

And now that I'm done jumping over hurdles (minus DoDMERB yet) - now make probably the biggest choice to date - who to Serve with for the next 20-30 years :thumb:

I believe this scholarship will pay the instate tuition of $16754 + $900 for books and the stipend.

Congratulations to all the scholarship winners!

Type 7 recipient

Just thought I'd share, I too, received a type 7 scholarship. Pretty ecstatic about it!

Maybe a dumb question, but where do you go to check the portal?

Computer question for anyone that knows the answer

If a school requires a laptop for your major does that fall under lab fees (does the AFROTC scholarship pay for it?)

Thanks, went there and it stated that it was a non-secure site so I was hesitant to proceed, but did and was successful in logging on. No changes to status for now.

cmcd what was your status? my DD status hasn't changed from the last board so its hard to tell. I'm guessing another reboard. We will just have to wait for the official letter

Just an assumption, but since snail mail has already arrived to candidates, the portal update is done.

Just an assumption!

rupewvu,

Does the school state you must have a laptop as a student?

A school may say all material and tests must be done via a computer, but if they have computers in the library, than that is different. It goes from a must to a should.

Our DS's laptop was paid out of our pocket, along with the warranty.

The devil is in the details...again, does the college say you MUST have a personal computer, or do they SUGGEST you have it?

I would think if it is a must they will supply it and charge it as a fee for attending....just like the AFA. If it is sugguest, than there will be no fee, except WIFI, and it is not going to be a fee that AFROTC will pick up.

Our 3rd child is a freshman now, all of them are required to submit papers, test, etc via computers, but not 1 of the 3 schools have required the purchase of a computer for attendance. Suggest, yes, require no!
