Citadel 2012!!!

congratulations- if you still are interested in VMI - perhaps you ought to let them know that you have received this great offer from the Citadel- you might spark a bidding war! And if VMI doesn't match it- I think that you have a great opportunity with this.
Congratulations again!

thanks!

well, it's definitely not a done deal for me though that i want to go to El Cid- i think my dad will let me go to another school even without a scholarship, and up until now, it wasn't my first choice. and i've also applied for a Navy ROTC scholarship which hasn't accepted or rejected me yet. so it's possible that i could have scholarship money even if i go someplace else like VMI...

so i'm definitely going to still be thinking hard about this and my other choices.

but it's definitely a nice surprise! :biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

(and i think i'm going to be forced now to pay my $300 deposit, and get my physical exam, to make sure this doesn't suddenly disappear on me! )

Yeah, I just sent in my deposit and forms today by FedEx. Should be arriving over there on Monday. Costed me $26!!!

yeah! good idea! but how would you suggest i say it? should i tell admissions or the scholarship/financial aid ppl? i don't want to be rude.

VMI did offer me some money. about $5000/yr. that sounded pretty good. but $37K/yr sounds a lot better of course! but i also think VMI is cheaper than the Citadel for out of state students.

i think though that if i did get an nrotc 4-yr scholarship, then it won't matter so much. with other scholarships, there would only be a few thousand more for my parents to pay every year.

Does VMI specify an admissions counselor for you? I've been in constant contact with my admissions counselor. Definitely talk to your counselor if that's the case. If not, just email general admissions. There's nothing wrong in bargaining your FUTURE. :) Good luck with everything.

BTW.

If for some awful (jk) reason you do decide to go to VMI, keep in touch, i'm sure we'd have lots of rat/knob stories to exchange. Just don't try and make your school sound better. :unhappy: Hahaha, just kidding.

VMINROTChopeful: I don't have the answer but send me a PM - I know some guys who are there as faculty and in the Alumni Association who might be able to point you in the right direction. Again - I make no promises but am willing to help as I know that they are really trying hard to build up the size of the female contingent and are also trying to really bring in cadets who are serious about pursuing a commission. With you they get a twofer!

Yeah, it's pretty crazy. I'm getting more and more nervous. I hope I'm not the only one! Hahaha

did you do your physical already? because i haven't decided yet between VMI and Citadel, I'm going to just have the doctor fill out both forms for both schools.

if you already did it, can you tell me something? did your doctor fill out the portion of the form on vision? i don't know how my doctor will do it, he's not an optometrist!

It doesn't need to be an opthomologist or optometrist- we had the family Doctor do that for my son- no sweat.

ANy of you have experience/recommendations on how about I should ship my stuff from Southern California to The Citadel?

OmarY, the best thing would be to call admissions & ask how other kids have shipped in the past. I know of one guy last year that used DHL. He said that they were less costly than UPS. He'd put everything in one duffle with a TSA lock & sturdy name tag on it. Both DHL & UPS have the option of scheduling a pick-up from your home.

I'm still a year off from applying but I'm curious. How are you guys getting to The Citadel?

I am in need of serious advice and help.

Here's the situation.

I understand some of you may not have all the information required to answer my questions, but I am still attempting to get all the help I can get.

I know that some incoming knobs are already enlisted in the armed forces. Here's the thing, I wanted to enlist and do SMP. However, I discovered that SMP is simply a two year program so I will not be an E5 paygrade when I drill during my freshman and sophomore years.

Either way, I want to have the experience and I want to be able to show how serious I am about becoming an officer. I missed the January deadline for an Army ROTC scholarship so unfortunately I am paying for at LEAST this Fall semester. I am desperately praying to God that I get an Army ROTC scholarship this Spring. In all honesty it's not for the money, I just heard my calling and I want to become an officer.

So basically I have no scholarship/contract with the Army through ROTC and I am not yet enlisted. Thing is, I've been working with a recruiter for enlistment prior to my discovery that SMP is actually only a two year program. Is it worth it for me to enlist right now? I will not be able to go to BASIC until next summer, so will I drill this first year with a unit near Charleston or that won't happen until after BASIC? Are any of you enlisted cadets or do any of you have children that are enlisted cadets? How do they transport to their units during Freshman year when you're not really permitted to leave campus?

Much Obliged,
Omar Y

Not sure how much I can help you on this. SMP sounds like a great program but I think it applies more for enlisted soldiers who want to go ahead and get a college degree while they are in their unit. I think you're showing people how much you want to be in the military by just going into a military college. I cant answer you're questions about how SMP works at the Cid, but I personally wouldn't do it. But thats just my .2 cents.

I have had several opertunaties to speak with a number of the AROTC Commanders at the Citadel and I suspect that not a lot of people here are going to have a lot of insight into your situation. With that said, my suggestion is the simply call (or e-mail) the detatchment commander (or whoever at the unit) and tell them your situation. Because they are going to be the most educated about both Citadel and Army policy they are probably in the best position to help.

I realize this is an old thread, but if anyone is interested in gender relations at VMI, feel free to hit me up on IM or by PM/email. I can't speak specifically to the issues at El Cid, but I have a fairly decent understanding of the differences between the two court cases (which lead in part to both our current conditions).

My capstone project for the Leadership Studies minor is on tokenism and the process of integrating a minority group into a predominantly homogenous majority, so again, any questions, feel free to hit me up.

And with that... I will no longer derail this thread that was originally about Citadel 2012 (several months ago). Hang in there, knobs! It'll be over before you know it.
