Since DS probably won't here anything for Class of 2020 before the Class of 2021 application opens, do the BGO's here know the process to start that application? DS has a complete app, MOC nom, and his BGO has notified he is "Triple Qualified", but limited leadership with only church youth group president, Eagle, Drum Major, Leadership Seminars, and Squad Leader. Does DS just start from square one like he never even applied? Apply for Summer Seminar again and attend CVW again? Thanks for any help you can give...

Do not fill out a preliminary candidate questionnaire until you are notified of your status. I believe the PCQ will open on April 1st.

Dad...am I reading this right and you're looking at the process for a re-applicant that's going off to college in the fall? If so, the Capt. gave you a great place to start. Additionally, I might add a couple of other things that the link may not have addressed directly that you asked about:
    • Your DS won't be able to reapply for Summer Seminar..that's only for HS juniors going into their senior years
    • They don't extend a CVW invites (normally) for re applicants until much later in the process
    • He will need to get another nomination...they don't carry over
    • College applicants don't get looked at until first semester transcripts are submitted
    • He'll need to write another essay...don't use the same one...you can, but I wouldn't recommend it and he can use this experience to craft it
    • The college courses should reflect Plebe year courses as much as possible...no 28th Century Art Appreciation classes
    • He'll need to pass the PRT...similar, but different than the CFA
    • Will need to find something in terms of leadership.....lot's of things to get involved in on a campus but you need to look
    • You may, or may not, be assigned a new BGO
    • If he's not 100% comfortable with his SAT/ACT scores....take it again.
Most of the rest is outlined by the academy very specifically. The good news is that they love re-applicants...he just needs to step up to the plate and give them every reason to say yes.

Thanks Sydney C, in your opinion, what looks better on the re-app, student government leadership positions or Corps leadership positions? Plan is to be in Corps for the year so he will practice the PRT, sign up for Calculus, Physics, Chemistry, English, and Leadership Seminar. Will also be taking the SAT and ACT 3 more times until 31 Jan 2017 hopefully to get better than the low 1490 he now has!

5Day, DS is not giving up yet! Just being realistic and being an Eagle Scout, being prepared! He is determined to attend USNA and hopefully make Class of 2023 on his 4th attempt if need be, may be the oldest plebe there with a degree in AstroPhysics, but he will be there!

    Please note:

-The personal statement (essay) MUST be re-written, it isn't an option to use the same one from the previous year (that is per the USNA website)
-You need to still do the CFA...the PRT isn't a substitute for the CFA.

Either leadership position is fine...it is more what he does in it than "which is better." With that being said, it sometimes is harder to get leadership positions as a first-year student in a military program.

Thanks usnabgo08, your a wealth of wisdom! He is planning to re-write his essay and continues to go through his CFA weekly and of course daily runs. Best mile is a slow 6:40 which will never qualify him, DS goal is to get it to 5:30 by 31 Jan 2017. Thought about the SMC leader roles also, pretty limited, so may try more for student government roles and club roles.

Hope DS does not need your wisdom for the next 3 years, but glad to know your here! You should write a book!

I of course defer to usnabgo08. I was getting the essay and PRT confused with a different type of re-applicant and certainly don't want to confuse the matter for you.

Unrelated to that, has DS had the opportunity to engage with his BGO to ascertain what may have held him back this go around? Knowing that might provide a lot insight and allow for a more focused effort to address that portion of his resume whatever it may be.

He will have an interview with BGO after he gets notification either way. DS has kept a list of all who have supported or helped along the way for thank you letters from a soon to be officer or soon to be re-applicant. BGO says to wait it out and reapply in April!

It's actually best to contact your Admissions Counselor to understand what weaknesses, if any, there were in your application. They have better insight than BGOs, since we don't see all the information. Your BGO is likely going to defer you to Admissions and if they don't, then they are giving you a very superficial answer based on information you provide them, which is likely not complete. You should engage the Admissions office over the summer (not earlier than June) since they will still be working with the current class.

A 6:40 CFA certainly won't disqualify him. As we all know USNA does not publish mins, but a 6:40 I am sure is passing for the mile run. We have seen candidates in the low 8s pass. Agree, keep training an pushing. He is certainly still in the hunt and not out of the running yet! So don't give up on this year. Also he should be turning his attention the PRT vice CFA at this point as he will be taking that USNA or if ROTC is his Plan B. If he ends up at Plan B and has to retake his CFA he can alter his workouts with more speed work for the mile.
