Class of 2015 - Mailbox Stalkers Club

Plan B & C

DS has been accepted to Rose-Hulman (Plan B-formerly Rose-Polytechnic, and co-ed only since 1991) and Purdue University, School of Electrical/Computer Engineering (Plan C). Either will be an excellent choice if Plan A doesn't come through. Good luck to each of you! Still waiting in IN.

I may be mistaken (wouldn't be the first time), but my understanding was that a VP nom is attached to a person just like the MOC nom....it's just that the VP noms can be prioritzed by the AFA. I was told that NO ONE can get an appointment without a nom attached to their name.

Correct. Anyone who did not receive a nomination cannot not under any circumstances receive an appointment. It's that simple.

I believe you are right. Therefore I thought they used the VP nomination as a safety net for those who fell through the cracks, i.e. the AFA actually awards the VP nomination and not the VP himself.

That's right.....but the VP noms come from the VP and are attached to a person. No one is qualified and "in the running" without a nom attached to their name. That includes the VP noms....they are awarded to "real applicants" and then submitted to the AFA. Again, I could be wrong but I think I'm right on this one! It can be confusing....we are a non-military family and DS is our first SA applicant so learning curve has been steep! This forum has been most helpful. And as I always like to say, if you are a candidate reading this, I hope you get the BFE!

The Academy also redistributes the nominations from people who relinquish their nominations.

e.g. - Someone gets and appointment to the USAFA, USNA, USMA, and accepts and appointment to the USNA - his nom's to the USAFA and USMA will be freed up and given to applicants of the USAFA and USMA choosing. I'm not saying they do this all the time, I am just saying they can.

Directly from the White House website:

Military Academy Nomination Process
The Vice President is authorized to nominate individuals to the United States Military, Naval, and Air Force Academies but can not nominate to either the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and does not nominate to the U.S. Coast Guard Academy.

The Vice President is the only authorized nominating authority who can nominate U.S. citizens without geographical restrictions. He may have a maximum number of five nominees in attendance at each authorized academy at any one time. Normally, he has one or two vacancies each year. In order to be entered into competition for a Vice Presidential nomination, applicants must complete the online nomination application during the application period of March 1 to January 31 preceding the year of entrance to the academies. The Office of the Vice President will not accept paper applications.

•Steps for the Military Academies Application process
•Procedures for the Military Academies Application process
•Military Academies Application form
Due to a large volume of applicants (usually several thousand per academy), the Vice President has authorized the academies to evaluate all applications and rank them according to qualifications. In screening candidates, the academies evaluate an individual's high school or college academic record, results of the ACT and SAT tests, recommendations from individuals who are in a position to judge the applicant's character and academic potential, and physical and medical qualifications. In view of this screening by the academies, it is important that all correspondence subsequent to actual application (e.g., letters of recommendation, high school and college transcripts and ACT/SAT examination results) be forwarded directly to the academy when requested. Do not send this information directly to the Vice President.

Notification of those selected for a nomination is normally made during February or March of the year in which the class convenes

..his nom's to the USAFA and USMA will be freed up and given to applicants of the USAFA and USMA choosing..
Doesn't the USAFA have to offer those noms (in your example) to another qualified applicant from the original MOCs slate?

Great question......perhaps one of the "vets" can answer that for us! But the WH website says "without geographical restrictions" ?

The VP website may say that but I was questioning whether a MOCs nom needed to be applied to someone else on the MOCs list.

I am in the same boat as everyone else in here...still wating for that BFE. But, I have been accepted to Georgia Tech and received an AFROTC scholarship, so my plan B is not looking too bad.

I am from Maryland fyi.

A MOC can only nominate someone from his/her district.

On the other note, our plan B school has told us not to accept admission. If something happens during--or before--BCT, the chair of engineering will work to get DS in. Seems riskier than accepting then withdrawing if he makes through A-day.

Congrats KS3,

ROTC scholarships are like hens teeth this year. An having a "regular" college experience is something you only have one chance at - so it is a great option!

Anxious

My son has also been accepted by early notification to Georgia Tech, but did not apply for AFROTC because he wants to academic challenge of the AFA...His plan B to go to Tech is academically sound, but difficult for a family full of Georgia Bulldog fans. We can very easily say Go Falcons, but go bees just doesn't come out right...He has Senate and Rep nominations, and qualifies in all three areas...but we remain very, very anxious in Georgia...

Sounds like a generous offer, but I think it might be a good idea to get a solid understanding of what plan B is thinking, it does seem risky to a lay person like myself. i.e. a person is not appointed and also does not have a spot at a school.

My apologies....I did not catch that you were referring to MOC.

It does seem risky to me to not accept the admission. Our DS has an ROTC scholarship and plans to accept it and the admission to the Plan B school he has chosen. He does not have an appointment yet, but the "what if's" are just too big. If he doesn't accept the admission he won't be slotted for housing either. It is a $175 deposit that we may be out, but it is an insurance policy at this point.

waiting...

Along with wearing a hole in the floor from computer to mailbox...does anyone else have a problem in that an rotc scholarship must be accepted or declined NLT 3/31/11??? little lost on what to do here.
Here's to hoping...

From what i understand, certain types of ROTC scholarships were given this early deadline, while others have a may 31 deadline (mine is a may 31). I believe you can accept the scholarship, then if you get accepted to the Academy you can get out of the scholarship. Someone else please verify this, but if it is true there is no down side to accepting the scholarship.
