Last thread covering CVWs was a few pages back, figured I'd just make one.

So! It seems Candidate Visit Weekend invites are going out. I received mine via e-mail not even an hour ago, and "accepted" it just as fast. The dates are October 27-29 and December 1-3. I asked my RD for the former, just easier to travel and etc.

I am, of course, curious about how many other folks are going. But I am more interested in hearing others' opinions on how to make the best of this trip. And, even better, how not to be remembered as that annoying drag everyone hated. I like advice.

CVW

I received my invitation as well today. I haven't accepted yet because I'm not sure I'll be able to go, and my great-grandmother just died, so everyone in my family is a little preoccupied. I really think I'll end up going though

DS got a call today with an invite to CVW. He is thrilled to say the least! Wondering if anyone can share their experience if they attended CVW... also assume this is a good sign-right? For my DS this is exactly what he wanted since he had the experience to attend AFA SS but not NASS.

Definitely do the CVW. I was invited to two sessions last year and they are usually reserved to highly-qualified candidates, but you can request them too, I think. But definitely go. You arrive Thursday night and stay until Saturday morning with a plebe. You eat breakfast, lunch, and dinner with them in King Hall unless they decide to order-in food which I did last year with my plebe for Friday night. You meet their freinds, they tell you what they do in their free time and what they do when they hangout. You will do a lot of walking as Bancroft Hall. The plebes usually like this too since they don't have to chop...but they still have to do chow calls..:frown:. Sometimes you go to their sport's practice, my plebe's sport was rugby but he wasn't feeling good and decided to watch movies, shhh. This was during the Dark Ages in February. Sometimes I heard for those that go during the Fall that sometimes you are able to go to the football games, which is nice.

If you guys have any other questions, please ask.

Do you have a potential shot at getting an invite if you had not gotten a BGO interview?

Also, does having visited USNA before lower your chances of receiving an invited (like NASS and STEM)?

I received a CVW by email two days ago and I do not have my BGO interview completed on my application. I also have not completed my CFA, will be doing next saturday. I have also visited USNA as a track recruit.

Navy-Notre Dame game is the same weekend as mine. I guess I'll get to go to the pep rally? Although the school might be pretty well cleared out by Saturday. Is there anything in particular that anyone should, by no means, ever, ever do? Also, the preliminary e-mail said that dress should be really casual, t-shirts and jeans. That seems strange to me, since I'll be around people in uniform... Seems inappropriate, I guess.

For those interested, I basically asked for mine, but was told I had the invite on the way anyway. Makes me feel good. Oh, and my BGO interview is not submitted, and my CFA has been ... erased, I guess would be the term. In case anyone was wondering about application status-related business.

Just go there with an open mind and a lot of questions. Also, don't be that drag who requests that he/she not be called a drag because he/she thinks it is demeaning.

A nice collared shirt, sweater and trousers are appropriate for attending class and meals in King Hall with your Plebe :thumb:

CVW invite

DS got invited to two CVW last Fall and could not attend either one due to Varsity Sports schedule. He had already been to summer seminar and loved it. DS knew that if offered an appointment, he was acceptping it regardless of CVW. He was invited again in the Spring even after being given an offer of appointment. He wanted to get the perspective of a current plebe, attend classes etc. He loved it and felt that it was a good use of his Spring Break time. He attended several different classes, even took a test or two with the plebes, got to do workouts and attended a sport--I forget which one.
Yes, he took nice clothes for class (khaki and collar shirt) Try not to wear any of your own school gear, nothing with Navy on it or USNA as they feel you have not earned that right to do so yet. Bring PT gear-work out clothes that is! Be respectful of the plebe's time and need to do all of his/her work as they do have training on Saturday mornings too, along with homework.
And, most importantly, bring your plebe a "gift" of home made cookies, brownies, snack food, whatever, to show your aprreciation. Make sure you bring enough to share for the roommies, as well.
We were lucky enough to meet up with DS plebe from last year right before I Day this year and got more great info. We also treated him to a great dinner and really enjoyed meeting him as well. Our DS has volunteered to take on a Drag or two. So far, he loves USNA even though it is the toughest thing he has ever done. No regrets! Good Luck to all and feel free to PM me if you have more questions as well. Go Navy! Beat Army!

(Fixed it for you). There will still be a lot of people around, and you'll still do Saturday Morning Training.

Dress nicely. Think of this as a sort of job interview. Though you'll end up in a different company, the mids in the company you drag with will get a definite impression of you and whether you're the type of person they want at their school.
If you have crazy hair, consider getting it trimmed. Collared shirt and nice pants should be fine. Do NOT wear stuff from your high school, letter jacket, whatever. Those kids get made fun of kind of a lot.
The "no Navy gear" isn't because you haven't "earned" it, it's more because all we wear around here is "Navy gear" and people will think you're crazy and overly motivated for choosing to wear it.

Ask a lot of questions. This is your chance to get inside the head of midshipmen and find out what they think of the place. Talk to the plebes, talk to the upperclass, talk to everyone. Plebes love talking about the Academy, even if they're complaining.

Glad to hear about the pep rally, wasn't sure about it. I have to grow out my hair for a production of Grease I'm in, but I reckon it'll be fine. I don't even own school-logo clothing (or any military-related clothing), apart from a few club shirts that are required. I guess it's better to be overdressed than underdressed. What's the weather like up there toward the end of October?

Glad to hear all this advice, folks. Especially from current mids. I'm sure I'll get into the swing of things, just want to be sure to avoid anything I might not know about. For example, do us drags have to follow any plebe rates?

The weather's not bad. It's honestly hard to remember. Bring a light jacket and you'll be okay.

You don't have to follow plebe rates (hahaha) and you'll get your dragger a break because they're allowed to walk with you and talk in the hallways.

CVW Oct. 27-29

I was invited to go to the CVW Oct. 27-29. Can anybody tell me how important this is. Does this mean I have a good chance of getting into the Academy?

CVW is reserved for highly-qualified candidates...so it is not a shoe-in, it just shows that they are looking at you and they are impressed by your qualities and are giving a rare opportunity to see if this is really what you want. I was invited to two last year and was accepted.

Does attending NASS and STEM eliminate candidates from being invited?

I sent in my completed application last month and have not heard back- dreaming of an LOA.
(ranked 7/255, ACTs: 35 and 33, plenty of leadership/ec's)

Attending NASS and STEM do not eliminate you for consideration for a CVW but you may not be invited until USNA has reviewed your application or offered you an appointment.

Good Morning everybody,

I am now currently a plebe at usna. I am on the list of plebes in my company able to host drags. If any of you would like to request me as your plebe, just send me a private message. I am a male plebe in 21st company. We have not declared majors yet so keep that in mind. Sports wise right now I'm doing intramurals with club lacrosse tryouts starting next week. I'm taking calc III, chem II, english 111, cyber secruity, wrestling, and naval history. I look to becoming an economics major.

I dragged last year and I saw it as a very helpful and insightful experience so please let me know if you have any questions.
