I just signed the papers and will be attending the USMMA! I see the USMMA has a pre-bundled package that includes a Dell Laptop and all the fixings to go with it. Do most midshipmen opt for the pre-bundled package from the Academy, or do they bring their own laptops? I am asking because I believe I can find a better deal on a better laptop than the one the Academy is offering.

Thanks!

I think most did buy the USMMA laptop

I think most did buy the USMMA laptop because, one, it complies with the firmware requirement specified by the DOT and Homeland Security and only a limited number of manufacturers meet that requirement, two, the package includes on site support and accidental damage support, three, if you buy it through the NEX you pay no taxes, and, four, buying their package makes for one less thing to worry about in terms of whether you have the right computer with all of the required programs loaded on it that is eligible to hook into the Academy network. Last year only DELL made computers with firmware that was compliant with NIST 800-147. I don't know if that is still true.

I believe that the Dell model they list is the ONLY laptop that meets DoITs specifications. So one way or another you're going to end up with that model, and by purchasing it through the NEX it will already be set up so that it can work with schools network.

I think most purchased the whole package including printer. We were also offered an affordable 4 year warranty. It was much easier dealing with the NEX and having all of the correct supplies ready when he arrived for Indoc. Congrats to you and your family!! Welcome to the KP Family.

Ditto. Dont even bother trying to sort out the laptop and printer yourself. Its not worth the trouble, the NEX package is very convenient.

There is a lot of value in having the computer there waiting for you instead of carrying one in the day you arrive.

Agree with all above. It's not the hardware that makes this package seem like you can get a better deal, it's the firmware and special reader it has, which after you add to you own laptop, costs will be equal, and you won't have the DOIT support.

They also offer a great deal on warranty that even offers a rider which covers theft/loss/damage.

Congrats on your appointment!

DoIT and government software will wreak havoc on your computer that anyone who hasn't experienced it can't even IMAGINE. I'd buy the Dell one they offer and accept the fact that once they're done with it, it'll be essentially crippled for use as anything other than an Academy workstation. Buy another one once you graduate to use as an actual laptop, or before you go out to sea. We weren't given the choice.

Having a printer in your room is also really nice, especially for those last minute things, aka everything at KP. Just be wary of the fact that everyone who doesn't have one will want to use yours. But it's worth it.
