Lots of resources available to the 2017 parents on the FB page and a great place to ask questions without getting flamed. If the 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016 parents on there don't know the answer they reach out and find it for the 2017 parents. The FB page and the forum have great info and work well together.

Nay, I am '16 parent who lives on LI, and have pretty decent insight to alot that goes on there as a result. I offered to join the '17 page, and was declined. Just sayin.

    Sorry

Thought the page was just staying small until after Parents Weekend and the 2017 parents had the opportunity to meet each other and bond? They didn't want to overwhelm the new parents with the chatter of the "older" parents. They are trying to avoid the drowning out of the new parents with a flood of voices from the "older" classes. Kind of like the class of 2016 is struggling with? Agreed?

I guess. No issue. But poster above cited all classes. If the "right" folks are chosen, the reinforcement, especially during indoc, from more than 3-4 was very helpful. No biggie

Small representative group to get them through Indoc and the first trimester. That's all. :thumb: And they are being directed on the FB page to their respective Parent Associations. Lots of voices there to reinforce and support, as well. Makes sense to me.

    Deepsea is right!
No where else can you find alumni, current M/N, administrators and parents past /present, industry professionals etc. all who have an interest in sharing information. You will find admissions information, sports information, regimental information, sea year, academics, TWIC, DODMERB, visits, maritime industry information.

The very best way to learn about KP is to start on the USMMA website. After that five minutes is over come back here! They are updateing the USMMA site which has been long over due and it is looking good.

Start at the very beginning of the USMMA threads and read forward in time. If you can find the time you will gain a valuable understanding of the place you just cannot get anywhere else. You will learn the culture and recent history which combined will give a much better perspective than those of us with a limited amount of personal experience.

Without reading the postings here from the last five years or so I think we try to make KP fit into what we think it is. It is unique and has perks, challenges, obstacles and opportunities like none other.

You will meet some real characters along the way, and maybe even a few seemingly villainous types who end up being the very opposite. Try not to overlook a thread because the title doesn't seem interesting. Now I am not good at tidal calculations but with the tread drift that occurs here you might need a reference tool. Here it is .....read it anyway. You will find the gems of information hidden in the most unlikely places. USMMA is not like regular college. It is similar to the other service academies and /or other maritime colleges but it is unique.

Facebook is great and there are numerous pages vying for your attention but I have never gained any knowledge from those pages that didn't originally come from here! Ever. Look up above and read the stickie notes too.

Facebook will be a great way to make friends with other parents. It is a great place to share the joys and frustrations along the way. However that can a double edged sword and becomes too personal at times. I tried to explain to my husband what was occurring among the parents pages as there have been some struggles and dust ups. He had no idea what I was talking about. My fourteen year old daughter did immediately. :shake: what does tell ya?

I am aware the class of 17 has two pages up and running.
The class of 16 has no less than 6.
The class of 15 has one. However it is being discussed on the 15 page to open it up to parents of all classes! it looks like that will be the case but it is not official.

Newer is not always better we have learned. You 17 parents will find it is comforting to have a room to dish in where you are not constantly being told to pull up man pants! But once in awhile we all get our knickers in a knot and occasionally need the reminder.

Spend some time here and I guarentee you will laugh your butt off:yllol:, be appalled:thumbdown:, and will learn so much ( plus a 100 more questions:confused:) that goes into why KP has the culture it does. Valuable stuff. Some even I would call Scandalous. I learned much in the way of perspective. Even with the improvements and new stability recent history helps put newer happenings in to context.

I have been wondering where I left this soapbox! :thumb:
Besides you can't do this on FaceBook

Sudsy, on a second read through I see your idea of referring back to the Parents Associations fb pages. That sounds like a good idea too. That may have been sort of a missed opportunity in the past. I understand some of the those pages thrive. They will have a good mix of parents from all classes yet are smaller than mega pages. Good idea. I will contact the FB chair for our association.

The above info is right on (Kings?) point! This forum tends to be more business like and factual, while the FB pages more friendly, but not without the battle for FB "likes" and volume.

It seems social media has turned many parents into internet zombos:eek:. Remember to use alot of your own intuition and filter as your read through the endless pages of posts, opinions, bragadoccio, pics, etc. In a way, much of what you read will give you great perspective on the bond that is the KP family, and the diversity it includes.

I found the information very helpful in many cases, not so much in others, but as the ride moves forward even bad info, is better than none. Best advice I can give: stay positive, support your DS/DD, ask questions, and expect the full gamut of emotions as you go.

You should be proud of what your DS (with your guidance) has done to get in. I stil get goosebumps every time I see them in uniform, and especially during the National Anthem. Enjoy!

Congrats! Did your son just receive his appointment? We are from PA also and my son has been on 'Hold' since mid January.

To Forum/Facebook or not to Forum/Facebook.

2016 and 2017, come back here after being on your FB page. FB pages are great for bonding, pissing and moaning, helping each other out, posting where your mid is going to sea, etc. But you have to get support and feedback from the old timers and parents who've been through what you are going through and parents of recent grads to find out what is happening out there in the mariner world. Your kids belong to the govt now. Don't interfere with what they need to learn to do. Yes, listen, make suggestions, but the quickest way to embarrass or get your Plebe Candidate into trouble is to make calls to the Academy for them regarding a problem or issue. And when in doubt, send a PM (Private Message) to the "wise ones". You'll know who they are by their postings.
