What exactly is a presidential appointment?

It's not a presidential appointment, rather a presidential nomination. Available to dependents of active duty and retired military members plus a few others

Okay, so that nomination included a guaranteed appointment then?

No...it just satisfies the nomination criteria, and the SAs can only use so many of these nominations so usually still in candidates best interest to pursue other noms.

DDs application was complete back in mid-August. I must say that we were surprised to hear back from USAFA so quickly.

    LOA received

My son received his LOA letter on Friday morning, (actually I got to it first), and we had it announced at senior night home varsity football game. He cried tears of joy. However we realistically understand that this is pending a nomination. His medical and all else is complete and accepted. Nothing else is pending. Being new to this, can anyone tell me if this LOA increases his chances of receiving a nomination? There are interview appointments set, and he applied with everyone he was supposed to for one. We just don't know how excited to be about this letter, so we are guarded. All his plan B Cs etc. are in place. University acceptance letters come in weekly now, but his number one choice and goal is the USAFA, always has been. He will accept an appointment the minute he receives a nomination if he is so fortunate and blessed. We live in NJ where it is very populated and extremely competitive for nominations.

Thanks for any info regarding LOA's above what is online.

Congrats to your DS on his LOA. Well done.
As to your question, the SA's normally let's the MOC offices know that the candidate has received an LOA. In my DS's case that notification came prior to two interview's but after another had already been conducted. Increase his chances? Sure, MOC's like to nominate young folks that they know will get in but as has been noted on this forum often, it is not a 100%+ guarantee. In other words, you can't just call it in. Admittedly, he'd have to screw the thing up pretty badly but with everything he's completed already and on top of it, sounds like a kid who wouldn't take it for granted and will be prepared for the discussion.
Have him just keep doing what he's been doing all along....excelling. I'm sure he'll be fine. :thumb:

I have to disagree with Sydney about the SAs informing the MOCs of the candidates with an LOA. Lets do the math. Assume maybe 250 LOAs are sent out. For them to contact every MOC via phone or email that is 750 interactions, because every candidate is eligible to 3 MoCs. The RDs have a lot of files to work with. Boards are meeting now. If even it takes only 3 minutes to contact each of the MoC staff, that means it would take as full work week to do just those contacts and nothing else required for their job, such as preparing the BFE for the ones appointed weekly, answering phone calls from MoC staffers, emails from ALOs and candidates. Plus updating candidates records as CFAs, DoDMERB and nominations come in. Remember they have thousands of applicants.
~ It is common that the RD will contact the MOC to inform them of the candidate being charged to them so the MOC can make the congrats phone call.

I have seen many show up at interviews without the committee knowing that the candidate has an LOA.
~ Now maybe the SA did inform the staff and the staff when preparing packets for the committee did not include them, maybe not.
~ Additionally some states are much more competitive. I know you believe NJ is competitive, but not when you compare it to states like VA, NY, CO, CA, TX, FL where the MOCs are known to share the wealth and talk. Candidates from those states are happy with just one nomination even if they don't have an LOA.

My advice is this his career, get in charge of it now. Have him contact his MoCs and say I just received my LOA do you need me to send you a copy of it for my packet? When he goes for the interview, stapled with his resume he should place a copy of it so they know minute one you have an LOA.

I have seen candidates on this site with an LOA not receive a nom., but that usually occurred for two reasons.
    1. They got the LOA after the nominations were released.
    2. The committee was not informed of the LOA and they did not inform the committee that they had one in hand.

As long as he tells them I am sure he will get a nomination. Congrats and good luck.

Back in early July, my DD received a letter on the USAFA portal informing her that she was eligible to apply for EA. One of the paragraphs in that letter read as follows:

"How it works: Complete all your admissions requirements by the 1st of November and the Academy will tell you your admission status by the 15th of January. You will know whether we will offer you an appointment (if
you have an official nomination); offer a Letter of Assurance (if you do not have a nomination); if you are deferred to regular selection in March; or if you are not selected. Benefits: If you are offered a Letter of Assurance, we will send a letter to your congressperson and senators notifying them of our desire to appoint you to the Academy. While your congressperson and senators are not obligated to give you a nomination, a Letter of
Assurance puts you squarely on their radar."

Don't know how the other SA inform MOCs of LOAs but at least this is what the USAFA put out there. DD had a Presidential nom when she was appointed last week so I unfortunately can't speak directly to the MOC/LOA notification piece.
