Class of 2019 Appointment Thread

Simply for curiosity's sake... do cadre track posters on this forum? I knew they look at Facebook and other social media sites, but I assumed they weren't really able to figure out our true identities from this forum. Not that it makes me super concerned, just curious. (This is a big reason I don't do any social media aside from this forum, though, just to be safe.)

I don't know about track but but there are current cadets that still visit this forum from time to time to help. If they see something that makes them go Hmmm and they start digging at old post they can put it together enough.

Just like anything if you get enough pieces of the puzzle you can figure things out. Back in the day we called it Ops Sec.

As for Social sites they have their plusses and minuses. Just like any powerful tool it can be misused.

When I walked into Basic, I ended up knowing so much about one of my cadre because his mom has posted enough info for me to figure things out pretty quick on I-Day. It works both ways, but you can figure out who some of the posters on here are in real life if they post enough info and you are smart enough to put pieces together. That is why OpSec is huge. That being said, posting general questions, maybe even where you are from on the general appointments thread won't be enough to single you out. Plus, cadre don't have the time to piece together their basics life stories like you do as a basic lying on top of your bed at night not being able to sleep.

Yes, my Cadre had photos of all of us from Facebook before we showed up for I-Day. Not in my squad, but a kid had posted something along the lines of "I've been a jrotc commander, I probably know more about leadership than any of the Cadre training us." The Cadre had distributed copies of the post and they dealt with him.

The waiting is horrible. Thanks to this forum I let my son know not to be too upset if he didn't hear on an acceptance by January 15th. He has three nomination, presidential (thank you DH), Congresswoman Brooks (IN-5) and Senator Donnelly. Senator Donnelly's office told him he has his one nomination while Congresswoman Brooks did a slate. We are hopeful of course that he gets accepted as he has worked quite hard. He retook his ACT to raise his score from 28 to 32. His SAt is 1850 and thankfully he has academics, arts and athletics on his resume plus working a part time job. I'm obviously proud of him no matter what but being a Navy Veteran and a husband in the Air Force, the USAFA would be amazing. He has received acceptance at Purdue for engineering so his backups are in place should it not work out. Sorry I'm rambling! The wait is awful as you all know.

It IS awful...and the January 15th date is not a "you get it or you don't" date. Don't let him obsess...yeah, I know; MUCH easier said than done.

He said "man, if I have to wait until March, I'm going to flip. that will be awful." But, he understands the delay if there is is one. I have a friend in Colorado Springs that is a sponsor so if he gets in, she is going to request him. That will put this momma' mind at ease.

Pardon my ignorance, but I thought a 1/15 decision was likely if a candidate met all EA requirements. Additionally, aren't appointment decisions separate from nomination status, therefore waiting for slates to be complete would not be an issue...?
I'm certain this has been discussed before, but on my device I'm having a tough time reading the tiny print, let alone trying to use the search function. ;-)

From the boards here, it appears that at 1/15 you could get an appointment, a declination, or a deferment until March. Yes appointments are different than nominations but the USAFA cannot appoint under a MOC who has nominated someone on their slate of 10 that didn't complete the EA items, therefore that entire slate is on hold so to speak. That is what the forums here said and a majority of the appointments come in March.

Thx HoosierMom...i do recall reading that same info, now that you mention it.

I am still hoping your comment regarding MOC noms (and usafa holding an appt until all on the slate have been reviewed) will not come to pass. Doesn't USAFA give out conditional appointments? I know at USCGA you can get a conditional appointment, pending a variety of stipulations (DoDMERB, etc). It would seem that applying EA should be given some weight...by being given an earlier answer, despite the nominating source. Blah. More waiting, I guess... Don't want to tell my kid, but I'm certain he will take it all in stride. It's Dad and I who are buckling under the stress ;-)

I keep hearing different things like even if you are eligible for EA, it is extremely rare to hear "yes" in January and most will be deferred to March. Is this true? I have kind of been assuming that this is the first time they will give appointments to non-IC kids or kids who aren't incredibly amazing, but to us "regulars", who still have a good chance but aren't no-brainer picks for AF.

If things go like last year then the vast majority will get deferred to March. If you look at the appointment thread from last year you will see a small number received an appointment around the middle of January. Just like years past the bulk started rolling in Mid-March. But it is a new year so who knows....

Last year I believe there were around 100 offered EA. This is out of around 1500 total, so a small percentage. I haven't heard anyone say the number they are planning to offer EA this year, as it is only the second year of EA.
I do recall last year some who were deferred to 'regular' January 15th then found out shortly after they had an appointment, but most are March. I can empathize, it was a nerve-wracking spring of 2012. My DS with an ACT far above average, Eagle, etc found out on April 1st! That seems forever ago now.
Try to enjoy your second semester senior year and keep in shape, don't get injured!
For my son, it was totally worth it. He loves it there and couldn't imagine being anywhere else.

The waiting is so terrible! Multiple times per day, I get well-wishers asking "So have you heard anything yet?" I appreciate that they care, but I wish I had some good news to give instead of "Still waiting!" I feel the same way as the others, though. If I hear I have to wait until March, I am going to explode!!!! Okay not really, but that's how it feels. I've been on edge ever since November hoping to hear back from USAFA and another three months would be torture. Still, hearing "yes" in March is better than hearing "no" in Jan.

Don't feel bad, my DS is a football Blue Chip and he hasn't heard a word either. He had everything done by July and is eligible for EA too so the IC candidates seem to be in the same lot as everyone else.

If I have received a Primary Nomination and am 3Qd, should I be looking forward to anything on the 15th? Or will I be waiting until April or May?

Long time lurker, first time posting.
The forums have been so helpful and informative. I'd like to thank you all for what you do for these young men and women and their parents.

Like everyone else, I check these forums regularly for news of new appointments. I've stalked the mailbox and ask every day if he saw anything on the portal. It's a stressful time. I felt that I should share that when the call comes, it is worth every second to see that look of success.

DS received the call from his MOC this evening. He should be expecting his appointment letter any day. What a long, strange trip it's been. Best of luck to everyone as we continue to watch dreams turn to reality.
